I (almost) wish I could remember the lawyerly way trainer explained those charges and how it made enough sense that I shut up. CANNOT believe she didn’t charge me for braiding, too.

Hey don’t feel too bad. I grew up in a non-horsey family and spent all my time out at the board barn and at the family farm of a friend whose mother raised quarter horses. During my last couple of years in high school, in return for helping my friend’s mother win some English ribbons on her quarter mare, the mother let me do work on the farm. How awesome was that ???

My friend, who as a fellow adolescent was not interested in the horses and had gone on strike against farm work, was happy that I was out there doing her share of the chores. I thought the friend was nice but we weren’t close (we were rarely in the same place since she avoided barns and horses). I was surprised when she gave me quite a nice bracelet for graduation … now I get it.

Reminds me of the summer camp “stable management” curriculum which consisted mainly of picking stalls (and rocks)

Oh I was in one of those, too !!!

I learned all about manure-wheelbarrow-dump landscaping and erosion control.

I beat you all, I paid TUITION in COLLEGE and EXTRA COURSE FEES. For a class where we took care of horses and shoveled shit. Yes, I went into debt for professional shit shoveling. Luckily I got my head out of my ass, and switched to a major where I can actually get a good paying job with benefits.

Can’t say the same for many other people… Not to mention the “professors” were more concerned with letting their little ankle bitters run around and chase the horses and riders in the arenas. I think at least three people fell off and broke their back…

Wait what whyyyy???

There can be no depression with two burritos, sorry.
Because that thread was so anticlimactic. The burritos do not help with that. It’s very sad.

Probably along the lines that because your time was taken up instead of doing other slave labor activities that they could charge for…yeah, run from those set ups.

That said, I’ve been burned more than once by people who work for me…using my horse for lessons instead of riding themselves (so paid twice) and other things that are just not right without express conversations.

Hope that the OP get’s some resolutions. I’ve leased out horses before. To me, other than major vet decisions and perhaps making sure my horse wasn’t over worked/shown…I considered them the lessee’s horse and really just the lessee was permitted to ride them. If the lessee couldn’t show…I would have wanted my horse shipped home!!

I’ll be back to tell you what happens! For now, this is an anticlimactic post–I went to barn, trainer was not there (to be fair, I didn’t set a rigid appointment but rather asked her over the fence if we could speak on Monday). I did get out of work late, which might be why I missed her. I’m gonna email and set something concrete up.

Carry on…
The thing is, things were going fine, up until this last show. I’m done with multi-day shows for now–I can’t afford to spend money like this if something happens and I can’t ride (especially if we show out of state).

What about the prize money? I was always under the impression that it goes toward the horse’s show bill (to the person paying for the horse and show fees). I have no issue with the other rider using the money to pay for her entries but shouldn’t the rest have gone to me, since I paid all of the other costs? This rider simply used the money toward the bill for her own horse. She was essentially a catch rider for mine.
The prize should go to whomever paid the entry fees. So, if you paid the entry fees for the horse in the classes in which the horse won money, you are entitled to the entry fees. If the rider is an amateur rider she is not entitled to the prize winnings for a horse she basically rode as a catch rider.

Not necessarily, and especially not in this case when the rides weren’t authorized.

Even if the rider paid for the class, they didn’t win without the horse. Money goes to the horse, and then rider and owner should have an agreement on how possible win money might get split after the fact.

Im guessing that the trainer/owner entered the horse as hers rather than as OPs (BTW, is this a registered lease?) and therefore had ability to direct how the money was split.

Updates?

Ok I wanted the little arrow too:)

Adding my arrow and asking for an update!

Where did she go??? I keep getting excited when this gets bumped up.

Bummed that she has not been back to update.

Maybe somebody figured out who was involved and she got told if she posted anything else she could pack up and get out? It’s happened before. There’s always PMs though…

Maybe she decided to stay put and accept the trainer’s “program.”

And she doesn’t want to share that.

OP I swear I will hunt you down if you don’t update us…

How and when prize money is paid is listed in the show’s prize list. It’s a USEF rule that this info must be included. Take a look…what does it say ?

Wrong thread. That’s the Kessler thread on the h/j forum.

This was my guess too. Though to me that is an OK answer. If the OP talked to the trainer and came to an agreement that works for both of them then all is well (since the OP really likes riding this horse).

I just wish the OP would update.
