US Olympic Team and alternates named

Good morning

I am sad for Sinead & Lynn. To have Lauren with a direct reserve of Meadowbrook Scarlet, Boyd & Welcome Shadow, and Phillip with three :frowning: Clark & Lauren & Veronica have had a great spring but I can’t give any of the direct reserves a spot over Sinead or Lynn.

Don’t you think that was part of the selection thought? So less of a chance of a disruption on the team. I think all of Phillip’s horses are probably equally talented, and he has gotten them out a lot. Welcome Shadow might be a bit light on international experience, but I think Boyd’s experience will make up for it. So the only one with a single horse will be Clark, and he has been seriously campaigning for it. I think it is a wonderful team, and of course, if it all goes pear shaped, we can destroy the picks after.

I know she’s barely been out, and Rolex was a bad outing for her, and I’m really not a fan of her, but I still thought she would be aiming for it. She would’ve had a good shot to be on the team… unfortunately. I hate to admit it, but she did have success.[/QUOTE]

Yeah, I think she was aiming for it. She just hasn’t had the results lately to put her in contention.

Good point. The Olympics are a super important goal, and we want the best team possible, but there is also the long-term, overall career of horse and rider to think about. Maybe the motivation is to not disrupt the entire rest of the year of Lynn/Sinead/etc. just to travel to Rio and hang out. Whereas people that are already going and have a guaranteed opportunity to compete have to go anyway, and likely the horses named as direct reserves wouldn’t have been doing much at home anyway with their rider gone. Now maybe the others can aim at something different (although I’m not sure what the rules are as far as their accessibility in case they get tapped to compete last minute).

Why isn’t Sinead on the Nations Cup Team?
This was also just announced, and I feel like there could’ve been other riders selected.
Matt Brown (Cochranville, Pa.) and Blossom Creek Foundation’s Super Socks BCF, a 2006 Irish Sport Horse gelding

Hannah Sue Burnett (The Plains, Va.) and Jacqueline Mars’ Harbour Pilot, a 2003 Irish Sport Horse gelding

Phillip Dutton (West Grove, Pa.) and David Garrett’s Indian Mill, a 2005 English Thoroughbred gelding

Lauren Kieffer (Middleburg, Va.) and Jacqueline Mars’ Landmark’s Monte Carlo, a 2006 Irish Thoroughbred Cross gelding

I would guess that they are trying to keep the horses named as alternates available to go to Rio last minute. Of the four for the Aachen team, only Super Socks is named to both lists, and I’m guessing that Sinead and Lynn are more likely to move up the queue into the traveling alternate slot than Matt.

I think Sinead should have been the pathfinder. Tate is a solid dressage and XC horse.

I guess Covert Rights wasn’t even on the radar? Or because Colleen had surgery recently…

Covert Rights was pulled for soundness reasons right before Rolex and hasn’t been seen since. That speaks volumes, usually.

And the fact that Colleen had some surgery herself.

Listen, Boyd & PD are great, but let’s look back to London. Boyd didn’t get to SJ, PD had a refusal etc in SJ. Boyd made it around XC at WEG on his experienced horse, PD did not on Boyd’s questionable horse. There are several very good eventers, but you can’t ignore the horse.

I hope both Sinead & Lynn aim for Burghley. Lynn was so close last year. Didn’t push him XC, she did at Rolex, he could go out & whoop a$$. Sinead & Tate should go try to get their blue ribbon they missed out on last time  The Olympics isn’t a 4* so no need to waste these horses there, though that’s easy for me to say.

Lynn had a xc stop at Kentucky. I suspect they looked hard at Rolex. And even though some seem to think this one or that one should have been picked, This is how the ball has bounced. There have been other years when it got downright ugly. :frowning:
The bonus of going to Europe, [hopefully Burghley], should be a great incentive for Maya. An incredible opportunity, with much less pressure than the Olympics. Also hopefully the best horses will have gone to Rio, so it could be really a good thing. If she could get into the top ten there, she would be competitive anywhere.

Lynn and Donner did not have any jumping penalties on XC at Rolex this year, they just had a couple of time penalties. In fact if I’m remembering correctly Donner had a strong XC round in some of the tougher conditions of the day. Their score was not as good as it could have been due to Donner getting his tongue over the bit as he went into the stadium for dressage, and they had two rails down in SJ, plus time.

Yeah, I do believe Colleen has just returned to riding after surgery, so they haven’t been in the mix for summer competitions.

What are the advantages to the “direct reserves”? Do those horses fly down?

I’m surprised they will send Lauren to the Nations and the Olympics. That’s Risky. I like Lauren, she’s great, but surprised they would risk her going to Germany before heading to the Olympics. You would think they would want their riders bubble wrapped and staying in lol.

you are correct of course. I thought I remembered it that she did. I was thinking of the fence where Arthur had his moment. There were several stops there and I was thinking she was one.

sigh, I really need to get out more.

The riders all are still making a living…schooling and showing other horses. I’d be less concerned about Lauren at the Nations…and more concerned about some of the others schooling a green horse at home.

Yes very true, just thought the selectors would be more cautious.

They are all riding at Great Meadows and will rider others of course. Hence the need to reserves.

This ^^ I think this really sums up why the debate. There are more proven pairs than some that made the list, and particularly some of the direct reserves.

I do feel like we have named a team that will finish this year, so that would be a good start, and I’ll be keeping fingers and toes crossed that they can put together 3 scores that put the team in the medal hunt.

Has anyone heard if there will be a livestream?

If I remember correctly, Boyd did make it around xc. Otis was held at the jogs before show jumping and Boyd decided to withdrawal. Turned out Otis had an infection

You are correct, didn’t get to SJ.
