It is isn’t it.
Tamie is not on the 2021 Elite List Mid-year Eventing High Performance update…only the pre-elite list…Interesting
excuse my ignorance, but what is the difference in the two.
www.chronofhorse.com has an article on the press release.
Elite criteria…“ability to contribute to medal-winning potential at world championships…”
Pre-elite…“perceived potential to meet Elite status in next two to four years”
Tamie is going to be Sinead Halpin/Manoir all over again, where she gets left off the Olympic team so goes and wins the big 5*.
The “pre-elite” designation reads to me as the selectors thumbing their nose at her.
Interesting that Deniro Z’s problem is described as a ‘farrier‘ issue rather than a ‘foot’ issue.
According to Eventing Nation:
Boyd Martin and On Cue were added to the Pre-Elite list.
Tamie Smith and Mai Baum were added to the Pre-Elite list.
Erin Sylvester and Paddy The Caddy were removed from the Pre-Elite list.
Yeah - I didn’t see On Cue on the list at first but he’s listed under Boyd after Luke 140.
Tamie was definitely not on the winter list, which I found strange.
I now realize I was totally wrong in my comment as I was confused about the roles. Liz and Doug were already on the Elite list. The update Duvander was referring to in the press release was to add Boyd/On Cue and Tamie to the pre-elite. I agree it is weird that Tamie wasn’t already on it.
(Edited to add: I deleted a previous comment referring to Duvander’s press release about the performance list updates because I got it totally wrong.)
I think Mai Baum is a big risk with no drop score. He is definitely capable of putting up big scores but doesn’t always seem rideable on the XC.
I’m disappointed with the change in format because this is the type of horse/rider combo that you would love to see run.
I think it’s a more of a political move. Tamie isn’t the selectors favorite clearly, there’s some points being made here. But agree she produces too good of results to be left off completely. I think that’s why she wasn’t on the winter list but is now. And is not on the elite list.
If you look at the FEI records of Z, Thomas & Deniro Z & Vandiver the choice was clear. Mai Baum only has 2 4S & 2 4L’s, his only 5* picked up a pin, and 2 stops & time in Lima (3*). He & Tamie have a bright future (2022 WC’s ?) but are too risky for now. Vandiver also has a much deeper record.
We need to complete!!!
Our team is as solid as we get. Our Team is also 2 Aussies & 1, basically, Brit. Not a thing against any of them but it says a lot about our US program…
(FYI to the person that commented that Tamie was the new Sinead. Sinead’s horse was too risky to put in a team spot. The horse had a nose bleed issue. He could easily have been eliminated if it flared up. They were an amazing combo but can you imagine the flogging that would have commenced if we put them on a plane, he bled (knowing he had an issue) & the team was eliminated?!?)
I think if they really wanted to do her dirty, they could leave her off the training lists entirely. Even the riders on the pre-elite list are in regular communication and training with the coaches from what I understand.
There are some solid combos competing who currently aren’t on any of the lists; I don’t know if that’s by their own doing (not applying) or if they weren’t selected.
Agreed. She made comments about how she ran him lightly/didn’t run him at 5* until this year because she was saving him for the Olympics, and because he has had some injuries. Part of the problem with that strategy is that there is no room for error when you do make that Olympic bid - and unfortunately, they had some errors. He’s a stunning horse, and she is a very technical rider. But we have better teams to send to Tokyo when the two primary objectives are 1) for original team members to complete all three phases and 2) to do so with no cross-country jumping penalties. All other objectives are nearly irrelevant - under the new format, accomplishing those two virtually guarantees the team a spot for the next Games (and I DON’T want to leave that to the Pan Ams again), and sets them up well for a shot at a lesser team medal.
Could not agree more. In a drop score situation, they have enough upside potential that it’s well worth the risk to take them and see if you can have a crack at an individual medal. But the first priority of the Olympics is not individual medals, it’s team medals and qualifications for future championships. Without a drop score, I agree with the team that’s been selected.
If you want to talk about Tamie getting screwed over in some way, I don’t think it was by the US team selectors - I think it was by the FEI/IOC and the timing of the change in format. As horses teach us all too often, timing is everything, and when it’s wrong it hurts.
Deniro Z is out. Doug is in. Tami is traveling alternate.
No harm done at this stage. Imagine the chaos if the horse was unsound at the first jog.
Not exactly a shocker as he was 100% lame at the jog last week. Best to Doug!
Hate this for Liz but best wishes to Deniro. Tamie is getting what she wishes.
I’d hazard a guess that Tamie did not wish to get her place on the team due to another member’s injury.
Gutted for Liz!!!
Best of luck Doug and Tami!
