used motor oil for treating quarter cracks?

An old timer race horse trainer told me he always put used motor oil on his horses hooves. I don’t think it made them any faster or did wonders for their feet. That trainer is now dead at the age of 54. I wouldn’t really follow much of his advice.

With the technology we have now I would be sure to buy some of the hoof conditioners that they sell at the tack stores or online that the companies put a lot of money into testing before they sell it.

There is a reason it is illegal to dump used motor oil in the garbage or on the ground. Would you put it on your kids head or fingernails?

Family owned boarding stable back in the 70’s Yes my uncles saved the old oil. Drained it through cheese cloth and kept in a bucket. We all used it with a rag and rub it in good out side the hood only. Things changed when they started to market hoof dressing. Quarter cracks need to be filled by a farrier and secured. My paint has happy feet. I have not had a crack in two years where as before I was getting them and having to notch it before it traveled up more. There are so many hoof dressings on the market now and tried many. It’s what was used before there was a hoof dressing market. I gone back to old school for 2 years already and no problems. I get it from my brother. He drains it brings it to be. I run it through a cheese cloth and a funnel into the old hoof oil can. To this day they are all grabbing it and using it. There was never anything wrong with it, just stuff came out on the market and we all thought well, That’s nice lets try it and, we all got away from it. Still rubbing a bit once a week on the out side of the hoof.
