USEF method for Calculating points for Champion and Reserve at an A show

Interestingly the two horses in the hack-off were pinned 7th and 8th. Neither got points obviously hence the tie but given the judges has already placed one horse over the other in the hack I’m wondering if they were required by rules to do a hack-off. Or was it at their discretion to do it? The hack class included 26 or so horses which they pinned without splitting or excusing any from the group. So perhaps they wanted another chance to take a closer look at both to confirm their initial pinning. And the results were that their initial pinning order was confirmed.

10 6 4 2 1 1/2. Top four over fences only earn points for the hack. If a tie, entry with most points over fences gets the ribbon. If you have somehow managed to get a tie with equivalent points over fences, the poor soul handing out the ribbons buries her face in her hands.
This rule confuses a lot of people since they think that the top point getter is champion and 2nd top is reserve. If you are not in the top 4 over fences, your hack/model ribbons do not count.

Unless neither one gets a hack ribbon.
LOL, I have seen hack offs which by definition, can only happen if neither of the horses got a hack ribbon. The winner of the hack off is the horse who is the least bad mover.

Yes, they always have a hack off. One horse might have picked up the wrong lead or bucked in the original class, so it was placed lower, but is actually the better mover.

Or they do what Del Mar National did when there was a tie for Grand Champion in the pony hunter division (no hack off…one of the owners refused because her pony would lose) …they kept the tie so both kids won.

Under the rules, that cannot happen. If one person refuses to hack off and the other person enters the ring for the hackoff, then the first person forfeits and the second person is Champion.

Someone does not get to re-write the rules just so they do not lose.

I know that PCHJA has its own rules, and perhaps allow ties to remain tied. If so, that is probably what happened there. But it certainly did not happen under USEF rules.
