USEF Upholds Horse Welfare and Fair Play with Stiff Penalties for Doping

Let’s hope this is the first of many steps to clean up this sport. Larry and assoc. have been shifty as long as I’ve been in horses(long time). He was the first person I ever saw poling a horse! In the warm-up ring! At an “A” show! mid 90’s and I was young and naive, but even then, I couldn’t believe someone would be so blatant! The problem is that his methods clearly work, as evidenced by the many, many glossy photos of their derby wins. It’s totally gross, completely demoralizing for the rest of us, and just plain wrong. But the USEF has consistently rewarded his behavior by allowing their methods to bear fruit. repeatedly.
The poster who said our apathy is part of the problem is right, but it seems an almost insurmountable mountain to climb to bring some ethics into this heavily monetized sport. The horses ultimately pay the price. I don’t know the answer, so for now, I just play the game on a small scale with a clean conscience and avoid dealings with these types of snake-oil salesmen and women. Who really knows if that fine will change anything or not? We will have to see. It’s so disheartening.

Anyone who thinks $24K is pocket change is free to send me a check. Actually, if you think $5K is pocket change or $500 is pocket change, I am equal opportunity.

The $$ fine is really irrelevant but the length of suspension is not.

For Larry, if you think about it a two year set down is almost worse then a lifetime ban. In a lifetime ban they can set up a different sort of business and march forward with that business plan (Ward and PV). Two years is too disruptive for that. Kelly missing a year means she misses all the big shows.

I say, well done usef!

Victorious, just FYI. Poling was allowed at shows under the rules in the early 90s. I’ve never done it, nor would I want to. But plenty of people did at that time.

I cannot figure out how to paste/link it but Farmer/Glefke just released a statement insisting they were never contacted regarding the issue.

I don’t remember you pirate but if you want me to pretend I do and call you a name I’m happy to?[/QUOTE]
That’s because I don’t sit behind a desk and write on these boards all day. I’m out showing. With these people. And it seems like you would appreciate that insight if you truly wanted to understand and comment on the ins and outs of this

Because neither of them ever open their mail?

It was? I didn’t know that! this show would’ve been around 1996, 97. Either way, I had never seen it so blatantly done before. We all knew about “back at the barn” practices, but this was almost like a middle finger to everyone’s sensibilities!

Or they didn’t bother because they expected just a small slap on the wrist, if anything.

I always remember you as quite the desk chair contrarian.

Is there a way to make it more readable? Crazy small print. I can read the words that are in all caps.

It seems my sources were correct!

A USEF spokesperson said both GABA suspensions start July 1. Glefke will start serving a five-month suspension for a different infraction on Feb. 1. For that violation, a horse under his care, Symbolic, tested positive for tranquilizer acepromazine and its metabolite, 2-(1-hydroxyethyl) promazine sulfoxide, at the Aiken Spring Classic Masters Horse Show (S.C.), held April 15-19, 2015. Lane Change Farm barn manager Debbie Buchanan will serve the same suspension, and both parties are required to pay a $5,000 fine.
“Furthermore, they participated in the filing of false medication report forms for the horses Symbolic and So To Speak at said competition thus acting in a manner that is prejudicial to the best interests of the sport and Federation,” stated the USEF’s hearing committee report.

I got one of those letters from USEF once. Someone had used my membership number in NY signing as trainer. When I contacted USEF, they immediately accepted my verbal rebuttal that it wasn’t me, that I live in California and had not traveled to NY and there was nothing more about it.

It’s not a letter I would have overlooked, and the odds that both of theirs were lost by the post office seem… slim.

Plus, I expect that there is more than one letter that goes out… I imagine one when the initial finding comes back positive, and a later one with the hearing date and time. (Fortunately, I’ve never gotten one with a hearing date on it, yikes.)

Am I reading that article correctly? The lawyer is saying that someone from USEF should have told them?

Is USEF supposed to remember who is the lawyer for who and are they really allowed to spew allegations to a lawyer they are standing in the hall with?

Good to know Mr. Glefke has counsel on retainer for his many, many other violations (errr…“matters”) with the USEF Hearing Committee.
Ms. Navin is a credit to the field of legal defense for spending so much time handling Mr. Glefke’s matters with such diligence and making personal appearances before the Hearing Committee, the entire USEF legal department, the President, outside counsel, and the hearing staff.
Fascinating how counsel was shocked that no one said anything to her when she was attending a hearing on another “matter” for Mr. Glefke in front of the Hearing Panel. She could have perhaps bundled her arguments into one session, gotten a group discount, etc.
If the USEF HAD mentioned the most recent GABA gabba hey findings, you can bet his counsel would be protesting that such information is prejudicial to the matter at hand.
And Larry KNEW the horse had blood drawn. So

He really drives a Maserati??
