USEF Upholds Horse Welfare and Fair Play with Stiff Penalties for Doping

I think the email sends a strong message and sets a new tone. Maybe it was meant for the shock factor…I was very surprised to read it, but if it becomes the new normal, I believe it is a good change.

In the “old days” suspensions were printed in Equestrian, first as the AHSA and currently the USEF publication. Now that the magazine only appears in the mail is with year end awards.

Frankly, when I got it by mail, the back pages with the suspension list was the first place I would read.

To see infractions and suspensions, one has to go the USEF site and find them. Just a bit more inconvenient and out of sight than having the magazine in hand…

Well we know where the proceeds of this $25 “fan” membership will be going…

The Farmer/Glefke attorney team will fight this to the bitter end. Their pockets are certain to be far deeper than the USEF.
I wouldn’t bet on that.

Perhaps the “We had no idea we were being charged” is part of their strategy. Maybe they ignored the notification ON PURPOSE. Just a thought.

Tom Brady and Larry Glefke

Remember Deflategate? I believe the court’s ruled in favor of the NFL’s decision because Brady chose to be in the League, and broke league rules. It’s not up to the US Court system to run the NFL.

Likewise, how can the USOC overrule the USEF–as if they would? They want clean sport as well. Likewise any state or local court could but doubtfully would overturn the USEF ruling. Larry Barry and Kelly Welly choose to participate in the association, under their rules and chose to cheat under same. I don’t see any outside jurisdiction changing this ruling.

Give them their due process, if in fact they didn’t get it, have a re-hearing, and start the suspension in July like it is scheduled. Lack of due process–if in fact this happened–does not change the fact the horse was doped, and does not change the history that Glefke is a proven repeat offender.

It’s fairly common in legal circles to send important notices by certified mail, return receipt requested. I can’t imagine that the USEF wouldn’t do the same, especially for people who are known for lawyering up.

USEF has been pretty successful at defending their drug sanctions in the legal system.

Here are some other threads on GABA suspensions

These have links to hearing transcripts, which are pretty interesting if you want to get a sense for the process:

From the ruling on the USEF site:

“Thus the Hearing Committee
was concerned that neither Respondent attended the hearing or submitted any witnesses or evidence to rebut the Charge. The proof showed that Respondents were made aware of the Charges against them with appropriate legal
notice
.”

These 2 really are scum and it is a sad state of affairs when absolutely no one will man up and say I am guilty when caught. At the rate they compete and drug their horses, it is a wonder any are sound enough (even temporarily) to actually sell. Another reason I really hate the whole hunter discipline. I know, there are those that do not drug or lunge or whatever to get calm horses, but sadly, they are few and far between. Feel bad for all the poor horses trapped in this world. Too bad more people won’t stand up for them…

What boggles my mind is the people who buy from them repeatedly, even after the first 4, 5, or 6 “didn’t work out” or “didn’t seem the same as when we tried him.”

They didn’t know? OMG, hilarious. What was the “other matter” I wonder, LOL
I wouldn’t be surprised if there were further ‘other matters’ down the road.

The story I heard was that she cantered back to the barn, unaware she was being asked to test. So he put the tester in the golf cart with him to whisk her back to the barn after dumb rider didn’t realize she was being tested. Of course he had to stop and talk to someone on the way so by the time they got to the barn, they presented a different horse.
Who canters back to the barn after a class?

I cannot fathom that USEF would send their notices via regular mail with no tracking.

I ran an association medication and protest program. Every single letter was sent out with signature required or return receipt and tracking/proof of delivery.

How can a person not follow up when their horse has a blood test? This is incomprehensible to me. I am married to a lawyer. When I shared the news with her about the rent USEF suspension and fines she said a very interesting thing: “Remember the time YOU got picked for a blood test with our horse?” The one and only time I have ever been picked for a blood test was about 8 years ago. And my wife, a lawyer, still recalls the event. She was keenly concerned at the time that our horse tested clean (he did) and remembers the event as being seminal. How can a professional who makes zillions of dollars in this sport not follow up on a blood test? Maybe they are on GABA too.
I never followed up. Larry has probably been tested almost every week.

The USEF has stood down richer people than this.

^ By far!!

Someone with a drugged horse who wants to give the testers the slip.

Thank you. That was my first thought after reading that. Heck, even when in a hurry most people barely trot back to the barn.

My only concern is that wasn’t the whole Humble debacle overturned because of some fine print from the USOC? I feel like they’re going to try to bypass the USEF and have the USOC overturn the ruling.

So, am I reading this correctly? Larry is set down for five months beginning February 1 (so, February-June), then his 2-year suspension begins on July 1? So USEF has, effectively, suspended him for almost 2 1/2 years. Wow!! That’ll throw a kink in your business plan. Most of WEF, Devon, KY Spring, etc.

The issue with Humble was that the USEF didn’t have some rules in place, like the obligation for a necropsy, and could not prove what was in the syringes with the evidence they had.
