Uwharrie Ride (NC)

My husband and I went down to the Uwharrie National Forest this past weekend to camp and ride. We stayed at a place called “Canebrake” which is a horse camp. There are hookups for trailers but you have to either high tie or build a pen. We chose the latter and it worked out well. We went down here twice last year also but this was our first time out this Spring.

I took my “princess” mare Promise of Gold who had only ever done one other big ride at Grayson Highlands last year. She thinks she’s a princess and did win her class at Dressage at Devon in 2010. I found the contrast in the pics quite funny…from perfectly clean and braided to after 3 hours on a muddy hard trail.

That is me holding her. We’d been out for quite a while when we stopped, tied up the horses and took a break.

Me and Promise again. She is a Perlino dun…blue eyed double dilute with pearl colored hooves. We actually ended up, due to boot malfunction and the loss of one, going barefoot. She handled the hard rocky ground very well and even after 3 days was fine. I was prepared to shoe her if I had to but she didn’t have so much as a chip on her hooves. I was pretty amazed since she lives on wet sandy loam here.

I rode english my last day out so my husband could try my saddle.

One of my husband and his gelding Utah Blaine. I’m lucky to have a husband who rides and enjoys it also. His gelding is a pretty good boy…green also but smart and willing.

Great shots - looks fun. It is super cool that your dh rides.

I love camping and riding there! Been a few years since we’ve gone with gas prices so crazy.
