Vaccine and lameness

And my horse isn’t the one in question - but for any looking back at this in the future - mine is a Thoroughbred/Percheron Cross. In general, skin sensitive to many things - tick and big bites, doesn’t like rough currying, and gets scratches at the drop of the hat (I supplement zinc/cu and vit e with little luck).

One of my ponies went laminic the day after his shots, so please do take note of this. I had my vet out and it was confirmed. For him it was the Rhino/Flu (as the fall previous I only gave him Rhino/Flu and he was sore on both fronts for about 3 weeks - I just thought he pulled a muscle in turnout and treated it as such - massage etc. I didn’t put 2 and 2 together until this spring when I did his shots again and he was dead lame on both fronts again. He is just 3 this year and is not overweight and was not on grass last fall or this spring when he had his shots) and going forward he is to have banamine 2 days before, the day of and 2 days afterwards and it will be done intranasally.

Decades ago, first year rhino vaccines were out, our vet vaccinated our broodmares.
Next day practically all were sore all over.
We let vet know and he didn’t think much of it.
A few days later he called and he had given his broodmares their rhino vaccine and all his mares were sore next day, he told us sorry he didn’t listen, we were right.

After that he changed his protocol adding a pain killer and if I remember right, an antihistamine?
Don’t remember any of them foundering, just short strided and sore all over.

2 of my horses had reactions to their flu rhino vaccines this fall too. One spiked a fever of 104.5 that night. 2 doses of banamine one that night and the one next day and he was ok. And then the other had a low grade fever of 101.5 and was off his feed for a couple of days. Both sore necked and lumpy as well and just general manner of feeling lethargic for a couple of days. I was worried about a neck abscess, etc which I expressed to my vet. But the both ended up fine after a couple of days.

I reported both cases to my vet. And asked if we could try a different brand next time. And I will definitely be pretreating both with banamine next year. They mentioned that had no other reports this fall of reactions but it’s now noted on both of their files.

Vaccines can cause laminitis as an adverse side effect / vaccine reaction. I had it happen to one of mine a few years ago …within 12 hrs of being vaccinated …Zoetis & Neogen covered his vet bill after we reported the reaction.
