Value of Thoroughbred Mares as Broodmares

I’d also say that QH breeders may over produce at the foal level compared to TB. If you are breeding Western performance horses, you could put xx number of foals on the ground every year, start training, then have say what? 50 per cent go into performance at some level, 50 per cent end up as nice trail horses or barrel racers?

Whereas the TB breeders are only trying to make race horses. They don’t even want to sell their young stock to a riding home until they have tried them at the track. Then if they wash out they practically give them away.

The TB racing industry is also in decline year over year.

So the qualifications to be a race broodmare may be tighter than to be a QH broodmare.
