Very itchy horse- rubs head and legs raw

A bit more info…mare was tested for allergies and all allergens removed from diet. Additionally, the allergies are all year around. We get extremes of both.

I had a cat with the worst allergies imaginable. I tried everything… And I mean everything.

One of my horses has sweet itch. I have to keep her in front of a fan.

My friend has a horse that needs to be kept in a fly sheet or a Lycra sheet. The lyrca will cover the neck and face better. But that’s for biting bugs.

Omg, poor horse! Has your friend considered environmental allergies like dust or pollen? Maybe try changing her bedding or moving her to a different pasture?

She has been tested for allergies and all allergens removed (as far as they are aware). I’m wondering whether something as changed in terms of the make up of the feed or bedding or with the wacky weather we’ve been having the past couple of year there’re new biting bugs around. She’s only been like this since last summer and nothing obvious has changed.

Thank your for the update, really glad to hear that she has had all that stuff removed

We’ve also got King Animal Hospital now - a few of the good vets from OVC moved there, so check in with them too. Might need a referral from your regular vet but you could probably find out if they have a dermatologist on board before doing that.

Can you give me more info on the Apoquel trial?? Thanks!

I’ve intentionally let the memory fade because it was eye watering expensive. I believe it was 14 pills a day for a week, 7 pills a day for a week, 4 pills a day for a week, and then 4 pills every other day. The first month was something like $800. My vet said they essentially had 100% success rate. It helped but no where near enough. The maintenance is “only” around $150/month but then you have to keep it up year round or eat the insane loading dose every spring. Since mine still needs steroid shots it was $300+ month and I still had an itchy horse. We tried it for two months. The practice feels that mine is a solid two deviations outside of normal summer itchies but haven’t been able to suggest much in terms of next steps.
