Very premature foal

Ok, so I’m not a respectable person.

When I worked in dairy, I shared a LOT of medical stuff to social media because I knew people would be interested. Some outcomes were good. Some were not. Some were really good and then suddenly really really not good. Occasionally some started out dire and turned around.

The posts I made also described the reality of some the absolute BS PETA spouts as cruelty for what they were - ways to save cows.

I, for one, really enjoy when other people share their stories as they happen. Some other people do too.

And then there are people who choose not to share or to share only in person to their closest confidants. Also nothing wrong with that, but it’s neither better nor worse, it’s just different.

And for the record, this particular foal? I would have put it down immediately and I don’t really agree with all the extraordinary measures being taken, but I have learnt a bunch from taking a look at a bit of the material posted.

Thank you for sharing these photos! What a huge difference. Clearly your care was exceptional <3

Thank you. His vets deserve most of the credit as he lived at the hospital for over a month. It was tough but we knew all along he was in great hands.

Slightly(?) off topic. This came across my twitter feed a few days ago so I’ve been watching. This poor cow. She calved last night and lost the calf (I haven’t seen anything about the birth and don’t know if he’ll go into it) they put an orphaned calf on her hoping she’ll take care of it

Here is 88’ and her new adopted daughter-Nilla 24c
She had been an orphan calf we kept at our place.

We lost the 88’ calf.

We worked for three hours to save her but she was just too big.
88’ gave such an honest effort for her calf

Here’s a link to her walking so you can see how large she was

WOW! It’s amazing 88 was able to birth a calf that size. That video is crazy!

:roll_eyes:Me neither.
I had no idea who Katie VS was before this thread popped up.
I don’t follow anyone on SM - unless friends on FB count.
I find her posts a little saccharine, but the info shared is worthwhile IMHO, & no skin off my nose. She’s aiming at the non-horsey & if her bankroll can handle what she’s doing, more power to her.

I’m not sure she did :frowning:

"We lost the 88’ calf.

I am taking this to mean the calf was too big and had to come out in pieces :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

I had been rather nervous about her wondering if she’d survive a birth of what looked like 2 full grown cows inside her.

All breeding can be so heartbreaking. Hope #88 doesn’t have any complications from that trauma.

Good point. I guess I wasn’t thinking that through at first. :anguished: Jingles for 88 and her adopted daughter

:astonished: Poor 88 & sad about the ginormous calf :disappointed:
But 88 & Nilla got each other out of the sadness.
Life.:pensive:

Made me think about this pony mare & hope she had a happier ending:

Thanks for the update. I have been following on FB but the posts usually are delayed a little.

I think that since they have gone this far that therapy is worth a try. I mean, I did not think that Asombro (the PRE in the other thread) had any chance of a recovery of his tendons/muscles and him being able to walk normally let alone trot and canter and he was much older with a longer period of no exercise.

Seven has been afforded every chance. As long as he is eating and his organs work, I think he deserves a chance. I trust Katy will make the call if necessary and that she will take very good care of him at home with the rest of the menagerie if he makes that far.

#88 didn’t make it. He posted yesterday that she’d passed. He can’t talk about it just yet.

Aw, rats. Godspeed, #88.

Damn. It happens. Difficult calving can wreak havoc on just about every system no matter how hard you try and how many extraordinary measures are used :frowning:

Day 5. He’s been body clipped. You don’t want to miss this one

   I want to send him a little set of calf braces for his wee ankles. Although not my favourite, they’d stay on in water because they do up with Velcro.

Day 7. Not much happening today. She says it seems like every other time (like today) he’s not as ‘ready to go’ I wonder if his muscles are rebelling against having to work, like mine do when starting an exercise routine. But I don’t have anyone to get me going
