Very tender feet

I wouldn’t ride until the horse was sound anyway, and if normally barefoot, then would wait until the horse was sound without shoes or boots.

Is it absolutely certain that the reason for sore feet is “trimmed too short” versus “horse needs shoes/pads on uneven frozen ground?” I have one that needs winter shoes, even though she’s retired.

Oh yes, I saw the horse after the trim, poor thing is walking in soles no wall in sight. Both hinds done this way. I was asked over for an opinion.

Wall not touching the ground?!! That is horrible!! Fire the trimmer, no mercy for her. Much worse than I had pictured from discussion.

With no pictures to go on, when you say the horse was trimmed short, do you mean as in the toes are too short and too much sole (toe callous) was removed?

With ‘no wall in sight’, I’m wondering if the trimmer beveled the hoof wall so that the wall and sole share the load (or was the intent)?

@colorfan, I’ve never used them behind. One has to measure the foot to get a correct fit. I don’t see any reason why one couldn’t use them behind. They have a bit of stretch to them.

Someone has loaned a pair of Cavalo boots, they seem like they are one size big but they are in hand.
They did not come with inserts. Wondering about using 3/8 rubber matting, similar to something you would stand on in a shop for an insert.

Also, the outside of the boot is hard rubber, super slippery, I know the boot is a bit big but is soslippery I think they are worse than no boot. Is there something to apply to the outside to give some grip?

You definitely can cut a mat to create your own insert for the boot.

Usually, Cavallo boots have a tread on the soles, and I wouldn’t think they’d be slippery (?).

Softride Boots , or Easy Boot Clouds

Thanks, The cavalo boots are super slippery on the icyness that is our ground atm. Are Sforide or easy boots less slippery?
The horse is quesion is walking normally now.

You’re welcome! I would say the Easy Boot Clouds have a better tread in slippery surfaces than the Softrides in my experience

Okay, I see what the issue is with the ice.

People sometimes put studs into the soles of hoof boots to provide grip on the ice. Cavallo makes studs specifically for their boots:

Oh, egads boots and ice. I would not turn out in boots on ice without studs. I had a very scary experience once with an unexpected ice storm overnight. Luckily my mare was very sensible and stood calmly until I could lay a path of old bedding for her to get back to the barn. But it could have been an absolute nightmare if she had scrambled or panicked.

If the horse is walking normally now I would just leave barefoot in turnout. There are worse things than being foot sore.

Agree, I’d just bute/banamine and feed the bejeebers out of forage and cu/zn to encourage new growth

It has been a week since your first post . Is horse doing any better?

Earlier today I mentioned the horse is walking normally now. I am not sure what the person is doing re boots. I probably won’t see her again until spring unless horse flairs up.
Thanks for your help.
