I had a senior cat many years ago that was in kidney failure. I LOVED her, but when expensive, ongoing treatment was described that might buy her 6-8 months of life, I decided against it. Even if cost weren’t a factor (which it certainly was) I still don’t think her quality of life would have been worth it. Though I hated to say good-bye, I did it before her worst days and later bailed out another cat from the city pound.
Absolutely. We’ve all had those traumatic end of life situations. The best we can do is give them a life full of love and a peaceful release.
Thanks, guys. We’ve been here many times before and my husband and I practice the better a day too early than an hour too late (or whatever the phrase is!) but it never gets easier, does it? She doesn’t deserve to be kept alive because we can, she deserves the best life we can give her and a gentle, painless death. I appreciate all of you.
It never gets easier, but we learn over time when to let go. Hugs from Colorado.
