Some of them let you use old photos or videos if you have them. I participated in a hunter one, I haven’t been to the barn in over a month, I used a video from last summer.
I think they are a great idea if not taken too seriously. I am doing one for my clients with goofy categories like: “worst matched turn out”, and “Jumping Ahead Champion”. They can use old or new photos or video, and I have some former barn clients judging.
I am also working with a local club to organize an online show to help keep the sense of community for their club, and have offered to volunteer my judging for donations to a food bank (human or animal).
CHT_ Nice, I like your take on this… fun and for a good cause, keeping people interested in a difficult time. Good luck to you.
For hunter/jumpers, I personally think that jumping full courses right now is completely tone deaf. If you’re at a barn that allows you to still see and ride your horses, you’re lucky enough. Many would argue that’s already pushing the envelope of what’s essential. One misjudged distance or dirty stop could put a rider easily in the hospital. And for what? For a virtual ribbon at a virtual horse show? The medical community needs us to stay safe right now. I personally just can’t be convinced that jumping full courses is – in any way – essential or responsible under the circumstances.
That said, in a post-COVID world, I can see the benefit of some form of this for h/j…but not necessarily the competition/results aspect. I think it would be valuable to jump a course, submit the video, and receive a judge’s feedback.
I think they would be a fun thing to do and maybe get some helpful feedback. I really like the idea of having them benefit a charity. If I had a horse right now I’d enter some just for the fun of it.
Note- right now I would only use pre-existing videos/photos of riding activities and only make new videos/photos of in hand activities.
So…basically video clinics, then?
Well, yes.
And a reason to get out in the arena and ride with a goal
And repair my arena letters
and shore up the side where rain has been an issue with footing run off
and trim Archie’s bridle path, wash his legs and have a go at tidying up his legs
wash a couple of saddle pads and decide what to wear
figure out where I left the tripod and play with setting it up and filming my ride w/o bothering DH
Trim back some tree limbs at A
and make a plan to ride my tests on Saturday and submit them.
It’s a fun, easy thing and it’s really nice to have a silly little goal right now. I mean, I’m riding my horses already. They are at home, in my front yard. Putting a goal on it is just fun. That’s why anyone does schooling shows- some fun, some learning, some feedback from an educated eye. I look forward to watching the other rides that are posted.
If it’s not your cup of tea, by all means, pass.
I like it for fun, and something to look forward to. There are a couple I have seen that are for obstacles in hand, which appeals to me with my new mustang. I may enter a couple for fun and feedback. I would only do one with feedback from a judge however, so I am gleaning some new insight and knowledge. And a goal to work towards…side passing over a rail, walking over and through obstacles, all things I would work on anyways with her, but would enjoy getting feedback on ways to train her even better, different techniques, etc.
Of course if my horse wasn’t in my backyard, I wouldn’t risk traveling to the barn and being around others. I’m sure it isn’t a big draw for those that board and have to break stay at home orders, that would not be cool.
