Vitamin E for horses with no grass??? Also quick oil question.

@RInurse Rider the powder Santa Cruz linked upthread is the same as the Elevate powder, just drastically better priced at ~$0.11 per 1000 IU vs ~$0.38 per 1000 IU. You pay a hefty premium for the label. Also, if you’re only doing a half scoop of Elevate, you’re only giving the horse 500 IU, which probably isn’t really enough if the horse never has grass.[/QUOTE]

@Simkie how do you know that the Santa Cruz is the same as the Elevate? I’d love to save some $$$ and would definitely prefer pellets but I’m afraid of quality differences… I already feel like I’m slacking a bit by giving her powder and not water soluble. Last time I tested even after a month of supplementation she was still on the way low side so she gets the Elevate concentrate at 5000 IUs.

Elevate Maintenance is Vit E d-alpha-tocopherol acetate.
UltraCruz Natural E is Vit E d-alpha-tocopherol acetate.

Same same.

What’s different is the Elevate W.S. (water soluble) d-alpha-tocopherol

The only difference I can see is that the WS causes blood levels to rise more quickly.

I use human capsules off Amazon. I believe the brand is Bronson? They’re 400 IU. It’s under $5/month cheaper than the horse ones I’ve seen for the amount I feed, so if it’s easier to get the horse kind for whatever reason then it might be worth the extra $. My horse was getting 3600 from the capsules but I just brought him down to about 2400 of capsules plus about 500 from SmartEssentials. He doesn’t get grain or grass (in the winter). I may bring down again in the spring when the grass comes back!

I read the label

Emcelle is a less expensive waster soluble option, if you’d prefer to go that route.

I have started using Camelina Oil. It is a good source of Vitamin E.

The barn where my horse is boarded has all horses that are in consistent work on a minimum of 2000 IU/day. I’m not 100% sure on the brand as they order it for us, but it’s about $40 every 2 months. Our vet always tells us that the horses at this barn have the best Vit. E levels in all of the horses he sees.
