Thanks, Vesper. Just curious - is the stringhalt more apparent at the walk or the trot? And does your horse also have EPM?
Does anyone know if Vitamin E can be helpful with ulcers? Its been a long road for my horse and his ulcers just relapsed for the fourth time… He is getting injectable omeprazole and we might add misoprostal, Im leaning towards adding Vitalize Alimend and rice bran oil, and Im wondering about whether he might also have a condition that mimics his (known) ulcer disease…
Here’s what I think happened with me … horse was sore (an OCD lesion in the stifle that required surgery, and muscle pain), developed ulcers, then we treated and healed ulcers. Surgery resolved the one pain issue, but ulcers recurred. Got ulcers under control again, and added Vitamin E … no more muscle pain, and no more ulcers. I think the ulcers were created because of recurring pain.
I started my mare on Vitamin E a couple of weeks ago after we’d been battling some skin funk. Skin funk was already clearing up with a change in topical treatment (per vet recommendation), but what’s interesting is how good she’s feeling since we started it.
She’s been off work the last few weeks, so she’s a little frisky anyway (turned out 24/7), but she’s been throwing in some pretty impressive airs above the ground when she’s playing. They’re the sort that make her look like she wants to be a Lipizzaner. The other day she stood up from a roll and launched straight into something that was remarkably close to a capriole. I wish I had it on video! She’s a young Arabian who’s pretty athletic anyway, but she’s taking it to a whole new level.
I am a big believer in Vit E! I live in Australia and haven’t seen any powdered form here. Nor any pellets that are just Vit E. I can get the KER liquid stuff but it’s $99.00 plus shipping. So, I buy that for one mare who sifts anything she deems suspicious out of her feed, the rest of them get the people capsules I buy from Costco. I find if I throw them in the empty feed buckets, add some warm water and go about my business for a few minutes before adding the feed, they soften enough that no one spits them out any more!
