Wake Up, Dover!!

I have always been happy shopping at Dover, despite the high shipping costs, I know in advance what its going to cost and if I can’t find it elsewhere I figure it is worth it. And their customer service has always been exceptional in my experience, my sister bought me a pair of breeches for Christmas one year that didn’t fit and I didn’t get around to returning them until almost a year later and they took them back (without a receipt although tags were still on) and offered me a refund or a store credit.

We do have a new Dover store only minutes from my home which opened last year and at first everyone was thrilled about it, but now I am hearing complaints that they don’t carry enough high end brand names and instead are mostly selling their own line of products, that apparently don’t hold up well. Even one of the girls who works there part-time says she goes to our local tack shops instead for her own show clothes.

One of the joys of the internet, I have now found, is that - except for their house brands - I can now find pretty much ANYTHING Dover sells elsewhere for less on line. I recently got a couple of pairs of Equine Couture breeches on line from two different vendors, one pair for HALF the Dover Price, the other for about 2/3 the Dover Price, and the shipping charge was reasonable, and in one case free. The down side is it may take longer to find the size/color, etc. you want. Granted, it’s nice to see “everything” there in the Dover catalog - but now I use it as a reference book and seek what I want elsewhere on line.

While we are griping on their shipping policies…

I ordered a half pad from them over Christmas, with the free 2 day shipping upgrade. It took 10 days to get to me; 8 days for them to process the order and 2 days once it shipped. Good thing I didn’t need it right away, like in time for Christmas… don’t make offers you can’t follow through on.

I have heard this complaint about them before. They will say that the shipping time starts after it has been processed and packaged.
Well that is great if you tell people that upfront so they know that they are paying two day shipping to get it in a week. Not so great if people assume that two day shipping means two day shipping.

I ordered with overnight shipping from smartpak once, and it was truly overnight shipping. The product was on my door step the next day.

well, so far so good with my order from them: breeches came, same size i always wear, but apparently devonaire has changed their sizing because these are practically up to my armpits. so i call dover, and the lady was actually very nice and waived the return postage fee and found me a coupon and we’ll see if the new breeches they’re going to send will actually fit. (i bet they’re too small…) but she was totally up front about how long things might take to get here, which was fine. perhaps they’re learning from the complaints.

I buy a lot of things from dover like $29 fly sheets for my horse to destroy. They have a lot of that stuff, which is nice. And they always have things in stock, which is a bonus for me.

I did recently just go on a breeches spree, but went with smartpak because I can return things for free. If it’s a sized item, I won’t usually buy it from dover.

I really like Dover overall and I value them as a resource for all the things I need. I want them to succeed. I hope their people read threads like these because there is a lot of valuable customer feedback here. I’ve been their customer for decades, and I want to be able to purchase from Dover and feel good about the experience.

I haven’t been riding the past 5-ish years, but recently started again. I was going to order some new gloves, boots and such from Dover but the shipping made me cancel my whole order! It’s ridiculous.

I have not had any problems with them, although, I do agree their shipping costs are a bit high.

OTOH, I bought a pair of paddock boots, wore them to the barn and a lesson, and decided they were two big. I was just going to suck it up, money-wise. I mentioned to the lady I was ordering a different pair from over the phone, and she said, well, send them back. I said, but I walked in horse poo in them… she said send them back. So I did and got full credit for them.

I will always shop around however, I try to be as frugal as possible.

I refuse to order anything from Dover online and only use the store if I need something that I cannot wait a day or so to have shipped to me. The multiple prices for things just piss me off. You have to have the sale catalog with you to get the sale catalog price. You have to fill out a form every time you want a sale catalog and half the time they still don’t send one out. The local store is the only tack shop within an hour and a half drive from me. It has a saleswoman who is always treating me like I must be stupid. I went in to try on vests. Asked which was ASTM certified. She told me that they were ALL ASTM certified. I asked where the ASTM label was on the one she was trying really hard to sell me as anything ASTM certified would be labeled as such. She stomped off to the computer and returned to tell me that, yes, there was in fact only one model that was certified. Tried on a pair of paddock boots - way too narrow, and she kept trying to convince me they would stretch. Um, no. Needed a schooling helmet, they did not have the one I wanted in my size. She kept bringing me helmets in the $300-$600 range to try on. Really, I want the $75 schooling helmet, NOT the $600 hunter princess crown. I went in yesterday for Helmet Awareness Day as we were driving by and my daughter needed a new schooling helmet. Had checked a couple of places online that had the helmet she wanted for about $65 + 20% off + free shipping. The helmet at Dover was marked $69.99. Okay, with 20% off it wasn’t a big enough difference worry about.
Saleswoman rings up the helmet - $67.49.
Me: Ummm, “Excuse me but $67.49 is not 20 % off of 69.99.”
Saleswoman: “Oh, that is because this particular helmet is 10% off today”
Me: “$67.49 is not 10% of 69.99”
Saleswoman: “Let me look it up. Yes, it is $67.49.”
Me: What kind of math is that?
Saleswoman: “Retail on that helmet is $74.99.
Me: The box says $69.99.” (Show her the label)
Saleswoman: Oh, that is the Dover price. The sale is off the retail price. I can call and see if there is anything we can do."
Me: Nope, keep your helmet. Make sure you call and let them know that they lost a customer because of their shady business practices. I am so sick of dealing with a company that has so little resect for its customers."
And out the door I went to order the helmet online with a company that has my loyalty because they have always treated me fairly and respectfully.

I can’t stand that, "Oh, it’s not 20% off our regular price, it’s 20% off the full MSRP that some retailers pull on Helmet Awareness Day. Do the real deal, or don’t, but don’t be misleading about it.

I didn’t do my homework well enough, I bought one at Dover and didn’t realize until it was too late to that I paid about $20 more than most every other store’s sale price.

Seriously disappointed with Dover in Warrington Pa on Sat (Helmet Awareness Day).

It was not terribly crowded but customer service stunk. I was going to buy a CO and my daughter a JR8. We knew the sizes, just needed them from stock.

After waiting 7-10 minutes with not being spoken to or looked at (which doesn’t seem long, but it is), then waiting another 10 for the woman to not return with them ( brought the wrong size) we used our gift card to buy my daughter jods for camp and left without spending a real dime. Too bad for them, I was all set for a shopping spree, being deprived of good English tack stores where I now live .

Smartpak had better prices anyway. My daughters JR8 was $20 less on sale and free delivery. I was very disappointed. My parents were with us and wanted to shop but we left due to horrible service.Dover’s loss. Grandparents + child + tack store = serious money to be spent. I always get Dover gift cards from my parents and in laws, but may ask then to be Smartpak if they do them. Plus turned my dad onto Smartpak online so my allegiance is shifting. I was die-hard Dover. Now, not so much.

I could understand if the manufacturers were playing this game, but clearly they weren’t since every other store I looked at online yesterday was able to offer a true discount.

It seemed very much NOT in the spirit of Helmet Awareness Day, which I hope will continue and flourish.

I love Dover - had had nothing but super service from them. I use the Dover Visa to keep my shipping at a flat rate of $4.95 and get the reward points too!

I also like and use SmartPak.

The Dover customer dissatisfaction with shipping charges is a long time issue, but Dover must be doing something right. They continue to show year over year revenue growth and they keep expanding their brick and mortar footprint.
