OP let us know which event you will run so we can cheer you on!!!
Fox River Valley in Barrington is a really nice event and they will run XC even if it’s wet. The XC courses seem comparable in difficulty to KHP. Silverwood is really nice, but sometimes they will cancel XC if it’s too wet. But I think Silverwood is a good choice for a first event, too. Also IEA, south of Indianapolis would be a good one, and they have a nice water complex, but the facilities are pretty basic.
We heard a rumor about a year ago that they might have an event at Wayne again, but never heard anymore about that.
I’m going to take the advice of not competing at the KHP for my first try… I might freak out if it’s too big of a venue. But someday! I really wanted to try and qualify for the AECs to have an awesome excuse to go down there, but after pricing it out it’s not in the cards (at least not while I have 2 horses to feed). It will probably be Barrington, because I looked up the dressage scores from Silverwood’s recognized and I would get totally spanked out there, haha.
@iris2006 I have personally experienced Silverwood cancelling due to wetness - they host the schooling show series championships sometimes, and 2 years ago they cancelled XC - it was SOAKING out there, though, so I don’t blame them. I have also experienced FRVPC running in really wet conditions - I competed at “baby Barrington” last year, and holy crap. She pulled two rails in stadium because she couldn’t get up out of the mud, but I was so damn proud of her for trying her heart out and not refusing - there were TONS of refusals. It was that event that sparked me to finally get her shoes drilled and tapped for studs.
Ok! This year is the year, barring health issues with her - it’s always touch and go.
Honestly, if you have good quality schooling shows that run over the same facilities (or similar quality) as recognized shows, I wouldn’t bother unless you just have lots of disposable income to burn (which apparently a lot of people do). It will just cost you way more & won’t offer any comparable benefit. I have done both multiple times – the recognized events have priced me out & so to me have no purpose unless you are trying to point chase or otherwise qualify for something else that requires it.
If KHP has a schooling series, I would definitely do that though. Our Carolina Horse Park here does that & they are excellent – you ride over the same jumps & courses (& often with the same CDs) as the recognized events & they are usually well-designed at more accessible price point. Same rules, just (slightly) less impoverishment.
Something no one else has mentioned - at recognized events where all three phases are in the same day…NO jacket required.
Nope.
At Modified and below, you can be penalized 20 penalties for “wilful delay” if you circle between the LAST fence and the finish line.
But not disqualified or even eliminated (not the same thing).
There is no penalty for circling between the 2nd to last and the last fence.
The rule is EV141.1.c.1
c. Willful Delay - (Beginner Novice, Novice,Training and Modified Levels)
- Between the last fence and the finish line 20 penalties
and
EV142.6
- WILLFUL DELAY. A competitor is considered to have willfully delayed his finish if, between the last fence and the
finish line, the horse halts, walks, circles, or serpentines. The competitor will be penalized at the discretion of the
Ground Jury.
I have to ask. What do you mean by pretty basic? A stall has 4 walls and we do have doors!

It’s saying membership required, but if/when I go that route, I’ll look up who I’m under. Thanks!
I take it you are in the Chicago area. Folks there should know about the area better than I. Here in Indiana the IEA at the Hoosier Horse Park does have an unrecognized show July 5th called Leg-Up. It is a massively family friendly event. https://indyeventers.org/events
Divisions offered are:
Horse Trial: Baby Starter, Starter, Beginner Novice, Novice $125
NEW THIS YEAR Combined Tests: Baby Starter, Starter, Beginner Novice, Novice, Training $75
NEW THIS YEAR Dressage Test of Choice $25
And IEA offers several clinics that school the xc there at the Horse Park. And TWO water complexes now.
Come Again Farm on the far north side of Indy offers adult camps with high level instruction and unrecognized events. It has a full xc course at all levels thru Prelim. and a water complex. https://www.facebook.com/pg/Come-Again-Farm-303221040694/posts/
I guess they’re looking for a butler
I love the HHP. It’s a hell of a lot easier to get around than the KHP, and this is coming from someone who lives 25 minutes from the KHP.
Add:
Don’t have to pay for parking.
Don’t have to park your trailer 3 miles away.
Those wash racks - there are more than 6, I believe - are at the end of each barn. No hiking another mile with horse and wash supplies to one of two wash racks.
Thanks Janet! More rule reading for me!!
Sorry, pony grandma! Not a put down to HHP, we liked the IEA show a lot, but I’m comparing it to KHP! I don’t expect anywhere else to have the footing and $$$ for grooming, etc that KHP has. We love all the event venues and are so grateful for each and every one.
