Warmblood Import Nightmare

There is a local case that’s still under investigation. The owner of the lab has been charged with a lot of charges (forgery, etc), and I’m guessing that civil suits will follow. They did paternity tests, and drug tests, and it was discovered that many results were faked, that impacted a lot of paternity, custody, and drug cases.

However, this is a local lab, and apparently had no oversight. They were not doing the work, and were faking results.

I’m hoping a federal lab facility has a lot of checks, and balances, and trained personnel. .

Wow! More of this sort of forgery and falsification?

How do these people sleep at night???

Other than the woman who had a drug problem… what is the incentive? Are they rewarded for performance in terms of a quantity metric each month? Are they just total lazy and immoral, and have supervisors who also don’t really care or do routine internal audits?

I’m sure these stories are essentially the worst of the worst, and that’s why they are headlines in the news… but they are all really sad. So many lives impacted.

That’s my understanding as well. But someone also mentioned awhile ago that something else relatively common (maybe some sort of strep?) was known to be cross reactive, and might be the sort of thing that could and would cause a false positive on a CFT. My thought was that antibiotics that have been administered, plus the time that has elapsed so far should have eliminated/resolved some of the possible other infections which might be responsible for cross reactivity and a repeated false positive… if that makes sense.

The repeated positives on the CFT over and over and over, while also getting repeated negatives on the Western Blot over and over and over? The horse must have SOMETHING going on.

I don’t have Facebook and have been following via this thread… are there any updates? Horse is still alive?

It sounds that way. Or at least they have not said anything different. I have not seen any new updates since the “Hail Mary” one on Tuesday.

I know I said I wasn’t going to update again, but this news is too good not to share: he is NEGATIVE on all tests! They are going to pick him up tomorrow!

Here’s hoping he turns out to be everything they expected and more and that they can afford to feed him after this performance. Carrot shortage soon in California??

Holy crap, that’s amazing! What a miracle!

I hope that the protocols behind the testing are reviewed, so if this could have been prevented, it does not happen again.

I should add that the bloodwork last week came back with the lowest CFT result the horse had ever had, but the Western Blot for the first time was “suspect”. At that point, Belgium said they would not take him back and the USDA gave the family until 1/31 to euthanize him. The “Hail Mary” effort referenced by the mom was to try to send Waffles to an infectious disease expert at UC Davis, but they declined to take him. The blood test done yesterday was the last chance for the horse, and he was finally negative on both. The USDA has asked the family to make him available for testing over the next few months so they can try to learn more about what caused these bizarre circumstances. The USDA also told the family today they were right all along, and the horse was fine!

I’d be asking the USDA for compensation for making my horse available .
