I think I may be a bit of a wimp, but I do blanket my broodmares in the winter. It is very windy here, as I am on a table-top hilly location, which is great for bug-control in summer, but can be bitter in winter. So far this season, I blanketed them for about 4 days in a row, when it was very cold, dry and windy. Starting now, I will be blanketing full-time, and bringing them into the stall from dusk till dawn.
The babies, yearlings, and 2 year olds generally go naked, though I have put blankets on the very few who don’t grow great winter coats and who seem to feel the chill and wind.
