What would I be looking for if the bone were involved?

It would likely either keep draining or heal over and later open up again.
The small bone fragment would be acting like a foreign body.
Latest photo looks pretty good.

Do you have wood framed stall entries, or pasture gates? Almost seems like he banged his hip, and a splinter got in there that caused an infection/necrosis.
Could be wooden fence post (12’ opening but horses are horses) or wood frame in run-in (also big but again, horses). I did look for hair or rough spots and didn’t see any but that’s also my guess as to where he hit it. The pasture they’re in now doesn’t have any trees so there are very few options.
