Welsh Pony show question

I don’t want to argue and yes, you are right. Welsh Section Bs are shown in different tack. I haven’t done showing for a long time. It was unusual/frowned upon to show horses less than 2 with a bit. Seems things have changed. I can’t say I think that is a good change.

Yep. I’ve had the dilemma of showing 2 month old Section B foals a couple of times and nothing fit them except the white rope halters…and I was beside myself having to take them in the class with that on.

I’ve done that too – and those tiny little pony heads are hard to fit! I ended up buying a beautiful little filly slip made by Coopermill Harness that fits the younger foals really well.

Now I’m a bit worried about the bridle…Just for ponies said I should get the bridle with bit because he was a stallion but maybe I should cancel the order and get the filly slip lead for both the filly and the stallion…What do you guys think?? I would have attached the lead to the noseband for sure…

So although I felt bad about cancelling the bridle from Just for Ponies I feel better about getting the filly halter. Both my ponies will be wearing it and they will not have to get used to a bit so that is good:) Now I just hope I can get the Filly halter from Coopermill harness in time…Just for Ponies didn’t have the size I need in stock… Sorry for all my antics:) Thanks for all the advice!!!

Ok one more question…Do people normally braid or not? That’s it:) Thanks a bunch!

Nope! But they do show with their manes pulled and tidy!

Very few people braid. Not necessary at all. We show with a nicely pulled mane.

Rules for just youngstock turnout in the U.S., Section A’s may have one braid behind the ear and can be shown with full, natural or evened mane. Section C/D’s can be shown with full, natural or evened mane. Braiding is optional for Section B ponies. I hate when people see I’m also a hunter judge and braid their Section B’s for the show because they think I will prefer it better. I don’t! I personally don’t care for it, as I don’t want them looking like “hunter ponies” at a Welsh Show.

You can do either/or for Half Welsh. I find on the East Coast, they tend to braid their Half Welsh a lot more than on the West Coast. I’ll braid our Half Welsh if I have time…but we have 7 ponies going to the next show, 5 of which are Half Welsh…and they are going with nicely trimmed manes!

Well by the sounds of it a nicely natural mane will do… My colts mane is not as nice so I will probably even his but my filly has a beautiful mane so I will leave hers and let it flow:) I have to say I am very happy to hear that as braiding is not my favorite pastime:) Thanks again!

If their manes are not so nice, I will braid. I am NOT good at pulling manes (ask rideagoldenpony, LOL), so half the time most of my ponies end up braided.

It looks fine either way… depends a lot on the pony too. Usually weanlings end up braided because their hair is still foal fluff, too hard to pull.

I grew up in Wales showing Welsh ponies and yes, then youngstock (3 and under) went in a white cotton web or rope halter. Mares and geldings could go in a cotton halter or leather headcollar and stallions in a bit. I guess times have changed! Section Bs do tend to go in leather show slips it’s true, but you wouldn’t be frowned at in a cotton halter for any youngstock.
