Western Movies and Western Horses

I kinda doubt they shot the horse, but they could have had him trained to a wire or some such-been ages since I saw the scene so I would have to look again to hazard an opinion.

But I can say the horse Chuck Connors used in the Rifleman was bought at a ‘show biz horse’ sale and ended up at our barn in Houston in the late 60s. He was in retirement in one of the small pastures, I can’t remember anyone ever riding him, but we barn rats did amuse ourselves figuring out the cues for his tricks. He would rear, lie down (slowly especially given a touch of arthritis) and limp on command. He probably had a lot more in his repertoire, we just never found the buttons.

TFR - both Fury and Flicka (movie version) were Saddlebreds … lots of the old movie horses were ASBs. Shipped by the traincar from the Anacacho Ranch in Texas out to California to the movie ranches.

I read somewhere, and I hope it’s not true, but in Butch Cassisdy and the Sundance Kid, their horses died during the cliff jump scene. The horses were blind-folded and ran off the cliff to their death. True?

All I know is I’ve owned Paints for 25 years and I’m sure it’s due to the enormous crush I had on Michael Landon’s “Little Joe Cartwright” and if he rode a Paint horse then I want to, too!

Yes but you wouldn’t have wanted that paint, he was nasty and quite the biter!

Re: Cisco Kid

I think I counted about 6-7 black and white horses they used for that show. I used to amuse myself by watching how one horse went behind a rock and Cisco would be riding a different horse when he came out the other side.

Mr. Ed. I always thought he was a sweet horse, considering all he put up with during the show.

Butch Cassidy came out when I was a kid, so it’d have been in the late '70’s or early '80’s that I saw one of those “making of” documentaries and IIRC they very specifically showed that the horses that went off the cliff were dummies. I sure hope so anyway.

But did you know Landon’s real love was harness racing? Years ago, there was quite a lot of guys from here that went to California and back, and there were at least two horses that raced here that were claimed from him, and strangely enough, one of them was a rather nasty beast. Jay Silverheels also had harness horses. Met him once and was more interested in his racing life than in his iconic role of Tonto.

Beau - John Wayne’s horse in True Grit. I’ve loved most of his horses, but Beau is definitely my fave. (Seems like he had a thing for big sorrel horses, didn’t he? Still don’t know what they were thinking when they put him on that Appy thing…:no:)

And Denny from MFSR, of course. I’ve heard several conflicting stories about the famous ride - I’ve heard that Tom was the rider, and I’ve heard that it was a double. I’ve heard that they actually filmed it on a steep hillside, and I’ve heard that they filmed it on the flats and planted trees into the ground at an angle to make it look like the side of a mountain. I have no idea what’s true and what’s not…but I don’t really care, because I love the movie so much.

You might be thinking of the 1939 movie “Jesse James” where a horse actually went off a cliff. According to Wikipedia, it was this movie that started the AHA overseeing the use of animals in films.

Yes that was my father Dr. John Barkley. We worked and walked Koko for two days straight to try and save him. He made it through fine. Rex remained friends with my Dad.

Know this is older message, but I’ve been wondering about that Chestnut horse for Decades!! He was in many Gunsmokes. Burt Reynolds rode him a lot. Tad rode him, and I believe Chester did as well. Always saw in in movies too. He had a long career. He also was a big horse compared to others in same scenes… I’d love some info if anybody as an “in” on him… He had large broad blaze, with chestnut coloured spot near left eye.

Recently,Hidalgo. He reminds me of the horse I lost last year to lymphoma.
Also,the buckskin that Sharon Stone rode on The Quick and the Dead.
