What animal sounds like a crying baby?

Ok, I’ll play. First, I’ve been told by a nature expert from the Maine woods that fisher cats are not proven to make any sounds. And that the sound of a woman screaming is the gray fox (or red fox?). According to him, when claims are made about fisher cats, no one can say that they actually saw the fisher cat make the sound. Instead they hear the sound, then soon after see a fisher cat in the area. He said they don’t have physical evidence in their body to make sound (like vocal cords, or whatever the animal equivalent is.)

Anyway, if it is a dramatic sound, of varying notes and screeching, then I would say fox.

If it is a lower single raspy pitched RAAANT RAAANNT, but REALLY LOUD, then I don’t know what the heck it is, but I hear it ALL THE TIME!

A dying rabbit. Screams like a baby.

screech owl. Little bird BIG sound. I had one outside my bedroom. Woke up in the middle of the night and ran outside because I was convinced someone was up in a tree torturing a baby.

Okay, I was sound asleep! But several of my neighbors came out too, so I wasn’t the only one!

Around here… there is an animal that is LOUD and sounds just like a crying baby or distressed person…

PEACOCKS!

No idea if you have any around you, but farms around here are known to have them, and quite a few get lose and become feral. Just this morning while on my commute I heard a screach of a peacock from up in a tree.
Yeah, this was my first thought too. Horrible sound to hear in the middle of the night when you have to walk outside in the middle of nowhere Wyoming to get to the toilet!

Martina- That’s VERY interesting to know about the misattributed sound!

As for your “RAAANT” … is it a nighthawk?

I am still on the fence - could be a fox (or foxES), could be screech owls. I’m leaning towards the owls simply because I listened to ALL their calls online and I am convinced I have them based on their more standard, non-creepy call. However, also listened to a bunch of the fox calls and they sound a little more like the creepy factor.

Have not yet ruled out zombies, either.

You got a big selection to choose from :0)

Got any goats around? The police came out the other day because a neighbor heard a child calling for help…sigh. Those darn baby goats from next door keep getting out and then start hollerin for mommy.

We have barn owls that sound like something being killed… or looking for its lost mother depending on who is doing the calling. Check out their calls too. Our screech owls, well, don’t “screech”. If you haven’t already found it, this is a great guide to owl calls.

I think you have a ghost.

A red fox, a Fisher Cat, or an Ermine
After much research and careful discussion with a friend who also witnessed the sound, we are convinced the only thing it could be is zombies.
This is the best thing I’ve read today

Could be (& most likely is) a fox; possibly a Fisher Cat; most likely NOT “Ermine” (aka Weasel in winter clothing) will only make a sound when it’s being murdered.

I’m now and this question has been bothering me for over a decade. I used to live in . One night when I was 18 or so, I went out with my brother and a few friends in the desert. We were by a area called locally “the pit”. It’s about a story and half deep spanning more then a few football fields. While hanging out around the top in an area less traveled we heard the cries of baby, bone chillingly loud, seemingly a lure to get us to go in that direction. After some deliberation with my comrades, I ran in the direction of the noise, only to find nothing. But as I walked back the sound persisted. For whatever reason I waited until today to google the incident which lead me here. Whatever animal made the sound did so on some kind of purpose, because it never broke tune, no animal noise at all for over an hour. Anyways this link shows some semblance of what I heard.

p.s. about 1:09 on the vid with no animal in it

p.s.s sounded like someone left a baby on the ground in the desert, good god so eerie

p.s.s.s.s.s.s. maybe it was a mocking bird idk lol the name kinda points in that direction

It’s a fox.

FOXES I HAVE THEM TOO AND MY DOG KEEPS BARKING AT THEM AND MY CAT JUST STARES

It could also be a toad/frog. Many make sounds that sound like wailing kittens or babies… it can be very disconcerting.

I had a screech owl around for a while. I swore there was a cat being brutally tortured every night. Worst sound ever.

fisher cats also make screaming baby sounds.

Sounds like a Dogman! No joke! Check out Dogman Radio with Vic Cundiff if you want to hear a lot of first hand encounters with these things. I’ve heard of a couple of cases where they make the sound if a crying infant, loud and histaricle! One case I heard was someone remembering camping with grandma and they heard that sound, like a baby crying and grandma knew what it was because she turned ghost white and immediately built up the fire and moved the truck in close, piled the kids in and waited in the truck with a shot gun. Sure enough a big dogman came up to the camp fire sniffing around and grandma fired the shotgun at it and luckily it ran away! I say luckily because there have been many cases where shooting at it either barely fases it or just pisses it off! Lock your doors at night and sleep away from windows. They are known to look in windows and enter homes! If you have doubts about Dogman, please check out a bunch of Dogman Radio episodes. The people talking about their first hand encounters sound very legit and very disturbed! I find myself terrified and fascinated all at once and now I just want to learn as much as I can about them so that I can better understand them and how to react if I should ever see one.
