What could be the cause of this odd grooming behavior?

Some are just more sensitive.
How about one of those tiger tongue things?

The tiger tongue is my go to for the ones that hate curry combs! Having a collection of thin skinned chestnut TBs in the barn right now means I don’t even own a “traditional” curry.

Tiger tongue, a specific soft finger style rubber brush (sometimes called a face curry, one is a flower shape and the other is actually a dog brush), and a bunch of soft brushes of different materials. My one gelding Will Not Tolerate hard brushes or other curries. The tiger tongue is worth a shot!

I use one often and love it! He tolerates it well/doesn’t have much of a reaction. I love it for dirty legs (I hose down after riding but use the tiger’s tongue pre-ride). It doesn’t work as quickly as a curry or stiff brush, but if it can mitigate anxiety or pain, then I can work with it.

Any input on how effective it is at reaching the skin? It’s been my understanding that currying is beneficial because it reaches the skin and lifts dead skin while exposing the skin to air and increases blood flow to the skin.
