My sitter walks from across the street so there isn’t really travel time. I would be reluctant to pay travel time because the rate I’m paying is above average for my area and nobody pays me to drive to my job. I could see paying for travel time if I wanted someone specific who was coming from far away.
My area is 100.00 a day not staying on property, but 2x a day for 3 equines, 2 goats. I do ask for daily pics.
I board the dog if I can’t take with me.
Let me know how it works out. I’ve thought about signing up as I have a friend that traveled through France using this and loved it.
I will! I have a friend who does the sitting side of it (Vs the homeowner side) with THS and enjoys it a lot. You get applications from various sitters, then you choose the one you like best and interview them before committing. It helps if you’re in a desirable area and/or have a desirable house.
Can’t be worse than the sitter we paid $$$ last time who was supposed to feed 2x a day but came at noon and 4pm, and also left one of the cats in the garage without food for days and didn’t even notice…
admittedly I live in a pretty closely knit neighborhood, one neighbor at times has to visit some of the plants his company has around the county … I just cover for him, nothing charged or expected.
As of today the Seven Great Pyrenees puppies we took care of for the boss of my son in law while they spent nine days in Mexico were picked up … payment was one of the female pups yet to be named (we had to put colored collars on them to tell them apart…she was Pink)
Wife was going to buy one this way she earned one
The difference in this case compared to your job is that traveling to someone’s farm prevents them from taking other jobs that might be closer or more lucrative. Or, their free time is more valuable - e.g. if they also work a FT job somewhere else.
If it’s 30 minutes one way, every time they come for an hour it’s actually 2 hours that they can’t work elsewhere. If twice a day, that’s 4 hours spent for 2 hours of pay. Eventually it’s not worth it unless they get paid to cover (at least some of) the time and the gas to do the job.
I pay $50/night for boarding for my 2 dogs. I would expect to pay something similar for pet sitting. If the person was benefitting from staying at my home I might expect to pay less (IE if they were looking for a place to stay anyway - sometimes this happens with friends in town for a few weeks). I have a friend with a pet sitting business and I think she charges $30/day and will only travel within 15 minutes of the city. I live in a lower cost of living area.
Just got home. All cats great - well fed and seem happy. House seems to be in great shape too, although it smells like someone else was here if you know what I mean? Got some scented candles going. Sitter was in great communication, sent lots of pics, and said she’d visit again if we go away. So, so far a great success!
$25 a day would sound right to me due to your lack of travel and ease of work load.
I would also have them make arraignments with their vet next time they leave so if something were to happen ( always possible) you could just get the dog in at no cost financial responsibility on you.
While I have done farm/ pet sitting many times it has been a while and we haven’t had it done for 12 years or more.
