to clarify. we’ve never had a flea infestation before so the allergies are not related to flea infestation.
the insert for advantage says i can reapply more frequently if needed, so long as not more frequently than 7 days apart. i’m going to use up the advantage and depending on results either continue with it or get revolution. in the meantime i need to pick up a preventick collar for ticks.
I’ve been using Frontline Plus for some time. I’m now in the midst of a flea infestation. Guess it’s not working anymore. I got Comfortis and Program. Two of my dogs are doing well, but the chihuahua seems to be a flea magnet. I’ll bomb the house tomorrow. I didn’t really think about the Program not killing adult fleas so you need something else for when the dog is exposed to fleas somewhere. Will probably try adding Advantage.
I am scared of Comfortis, becuase it looks like if it does go wrong…it goes horribly wrong. My JRT is my only child, I could not live with myself if I killed hom over a few fleas.
The only side effect I’ve ever seen from Comfortis was vomiting and even that was relatively rare and I’ve been at clinic where they sell tons of it… even more so now that they have the comfortis/HW pill combo Trifexis.
That said my corgi is currently on Heartgard/Advantage… but will soon be switching to Sentinel. We haven’t really had a flea issue at my house but if she does happen to get a few I’ll just pick up a topical at work. The lab is on Interceptor and Frontline Plus. Again we haven’t had a flea issue at any point and I haven’t seen any on them so I generally use what I get for free at work and I’m pretty sure I’ve probably used the all at this point and have never had any side effect issues lol

I get whatever the vet at Petsmart sells that won’t also kill my cat. They have a topical as well as a pill for extra hardcore killing. We had a flea infestation last year and I wound up vacuuming my apartment (we live in a house now) every day for a week and bombing it and washing my poor dog every night with flea killing shampoo. Prevention is so much nicer.
yes, excess bathing will probably reduce efficacy, but supposedly if your dog has a healthy layer on natural oil when you apply the product, and then you wait a few days, it should be water-proof. but it’s not working anyway (frontline) and i wouldn’t leave fleas on my dog to bite and hopefully ingest poison and hopefully die. i would just bath the dog with something not super harsh.
since your dog has some special issues, perhaps you should consult with your vet. i can schedule appointments with techs at my clinic for free, and they aren’t dummies. they will also consult with me over the phone for free. the bummer with confortis is if they puke, they are puking up the pill and it’s pricey. but i’ve not had that happen at all. i don’t know about more severe side effects with that one, but you definitely have to weigh the pros and cons of treating your dog with an insecticide and asking him to live with blood-sucking parasites. if your dog has allergies, health issues, etc, i’d check with an experienced pro, but regardless, you are taking a risk either way - whether you treat or not.

Our vet changed the spot on medicine to ProMeris and the. fleas. left!
FYI - our vet said to wait about 2 weeks before and after spot on treatment as there needs to be sufficient oil in the coat to work correctly.
I don’t have flea problems (never had) but the ticks are horrible! I’ve been using Frontline plus on our two labs, and I still pulled 8 ticks off of our dog the other day. It is killing some ticks though, because I keep finding dead ones in my bed!
Does Vectra work for ticks too? I might be willing to try it. Our dogs swim a lot, so I’m sure that doesn’t help keep the topical stuff on.

Just FYI Promeris is being discontinued. If you still want it you may want to stock it now. I believe they are filling orders through September or until they run out of stock. None of the clinics I’ve worked at carried it, but I did get samples at one point and oh my god they stuff smelled sooo bad and it took like three days for the greasy application spot to finally start to go away. My current clinic carries Vectra which they’ve had good success with.
I use Advantage exclusively, and it works very well for my situation. I live in a more urban situation, though, so that may have a lot to do with it.
Please remember that for any of the topical products to work, the parasite MUST be on the pet. They are not repellents (except for Vectra, and our clinic doesn’t carry that, so I don’t know how it works), and cannot kill the flea/tick unless the flea/tick is ON the animal. Also, if your dog vomits Comfortis within 1 hour of eating it, call your vet for a replacement/refund. They can make a claim through Elanco to have the product replaced for free.
Vet told me that Comfortis must be given on a full stomach or the dog might throw it up. We gave my corgi who was infested this summer a Capstar pill, then I gave him the Comfortis after dinner. The next couple days we were at my daughter’s farm where you know there had to be fleas in the fields. My corgi is a totally happy camper now and totally flealess!

The clinic I was at started carrying it earlier this year, sold really well and we didn’t have any complaints as lots of people loved that it was an all in one and they only had to give the one pill. Same rules apply to the Trifexis as the Comfortis, you always want to give it after a meal. It’s not cheap, but at that clinic the price came out lower per month than if you were burying seperate hw and flea meds by a few dollars usually.
Also the company that sells it is being quite strict with it… you won’t ever find it through smartpak or dr. foster and smith. It will only be available through vets and through certain vet websites (I believe Vetcentric is one of them). All boxes have barcodes and orders are scanned prior to shipment… apparently every so often they’ll have a rep order certain things from certain websites (that they don’t sell to directly)… they can scan the boxes when they arrive and they know exactly who the vet was that is supplying the companies. Often times they will no longer sell the product to that vet after this occurs.

Trifexis is simply Comfortis (flea prevention) + Interceptor (HW, intestinal parasite prevention) all in one pill. It works equally well as either two of the individual preventatives.
It is universally cheaper than buying either product separately, too (local prices may vary).
Does the Trifexis also come with the replacement-upon-puking guarantee?

Hmmm…I can’t remember exactly. You’d probably be best off asking Elanco exactly, since it’s not just flea protection.
When I did go to the Elanco presentation on Trifexis, however, they told us that if your dog vomits 1 hour or MORE after taking the pill, then it is considered “good” still and you don’t need to re-dose. If it’s less than 1 hour, then you should re-dose.

Really??? Where did you read that?
Did you know that ANY medication carries a risk of side effects with it?
From the Elanco website on Comfortis:
As with any medication, sometimes side effects can occur. In some cases, dogs vomited after receiving Comfortis. During field studies, no severe or prolonged vomiting occurred.
Additional adverse reactions observed in the clinical studies were itching, decreased activity, diarrhea, inflammation of the skin, redness of the skin, decreased appetite and redness of the ear. All reactions were regarded as mild.
