"What Happens to Army Horses After They Serve"

I shouldn’t have said that Thelwell was “full” of information. But the book(s) we had, the text wasn’t jokes, it was actual responsible horsemanship stuff.

Absolutely. Some of them I felt were Thelwell talking for his ponies.

I wonder if this could’ve been Lee Marvin’s inspiration for “Cat Ballou”?

I wish there were a picture, but I believe that this may be the same book I have:

There is also a copy, with description, here:

My book has a “red” (maroon) cover and faded gold lettering. No publication date, just Military Service Publishing Company barely legible on the front cover. 1941 sounds about right; my father was called up right after Pearl Harbor.

That’s amazing! I really think some type of army/cavalry/manual would be fascinating to have.

There’s a 1972 “revised for civilians” and illustrated by Sam Savitt, several at various prices and a new reprint of the 1938 for $48, both cavalry manuals, and likely many more choices.

The first one I found, for $60, is volumes I, II, and III of the 1935 cavalry manual. I can get just volume III for $16, but it’s only Horse Shows, Race Meetings, and Hunter Trials. Volume II is Horseshoeing and Animal Management.

Would I get enough more from the $48 reprint than the artillery manual, do you think?

On second thought, probably better skip the book. Already spent plenty this month, and it’s only the 18th…

The $16 manual sounds fascinating to me.

The 2 manuals I found online are $10 each (for all I know they are the same copy available through 2 different vendors). The manual I have is 534 pages including index; chapters include – in addition to Equitation, and Driving and Draft, and Mounted Formations and Maneuvers – Service of the Piece (horse-drawn and truck-drawn guns); Pistol; The Motor Driver; Standards and Guidons; Interior Guard Duty; Ceremonies; Individual Equipment and Tent Pitching; Military Courtesy and Discipline; and of course The Field Artillery Song.

The $16 manual is from US Cavalry Association; I just googled us cavalry manual to find it. Sorry I don’t know how to do links on a cell phone, just on computer, which I don’t have.

Shoot, I would like one of these books; I’ve had extra money :moneybag: the last few months, but have already gotten four books, long underwear, sheets and a $24 barn jacket this month.

Drat. I went to buy the field artillery manual (figured 500-some pages must have bunches I’d learn from, the cavalry manual was only 180 pages) and it’s gone. Apparently both links you posted for the same book. Drat…

Oh, shoot. I am sorry to hear that. :frowning:

Wow, where can I find a barn jacket for $24? I’ve been looking for an affordable one.

Lands End. And it’s “barn” in name only; not like a tough Carhartt.

I have seen the Lands’ End and LL Bean “barn” jackets online and wondered how they would last in an actual barn. I’ve been looking at Carhartts online too, especially the sherpa-lined Rain Defender ones. They look great but they’re way out of my $24± price range, and I can’t tell if they’re lightweight or heavy. Guess I should head over to Tractor Supply and try some on …

ETA: My 17yo Lands’ End fleece jacket is still going strong after being used as a riding/barn/show* jacket for at least 15 of the 17 years.
*Show spectating/grooming jacket, that is.

I wonder if this is the same “sold” book. I got as far as the ‘checkout’ to see, but I’m still not sure…

The one at Abe Books sure looks like the one I saw on their website the other day, and it’s the same price, $10 (once you click on the $18 price).
I hope it is, @ShenanAnna, if you still want to buy it.

Thank you both for your book research! I tried both of Rackonteur’s links, both came up as 0 in stock, so I assumed “sold.” But I’ve bought it now!!! $10., plus $8 shipping. That’s just fine, for all the stuff in it. Individual Equipment and Tent Pitching, Ceremonies, and of course The Field Artillery Song.

And this so-called barn jacket is quilted polyester. If it were nylon, I’d have very high expectations for durability. I’ve been buying Lands End since the 1980s, and only remember one shirt wearing out.

Yay! I am glad you found the book and bought it. After I got my copy out to look through it to post here, I started rereading the Equitation chapter, and now I think I’m gonna read the rest of the book before I put it back on the shelf.

Thank you for telling me about your Lands’ End jacket. I’ve ordered from them a lot too, over the years, and only ever had one thing I didn’t like, a pair of jeans I ordered just a few years ago. They are like LL Bean IME as far as quality, plus they have much better sales; today they offered me 50% off some items plus free shipping!!! I almost ordered a fleece top. But I have to take my cat to the vet next week to try a new arthritis drug …

I almost ordered a fleece top, too. The one I got at a thrift shop looks so good! But, this is all I need. Maybe, someday, the needs and wants will match a little better…

And, of course, cat takes priority. Hope all goes well. I’ve got arthritis in my hips and knees, and it’s no fun. Jingles for kitty. Thanks again for all your help.
