What kind of wet cat food do you feed?

I’ve been looking through a lot of these suggested brands, and many of them are full of vegetables! Doesn’t it make you lose faith in a cat food company when they are putting vegetables and rice in cat food?

I couldn’t find anything on the Natural Balance list that didn’t contain grain or vegetables.

I know that a number of the replys mention feeding ‘grain free’ foods. In response to this, I often notice my barn kitties eating the chicken scratch grains (They are nutered, wormed regularly, and well feed barn kitties!) . So, I’m of the camp that does not get too upset when wet cat foods include small amounts of grain.

Yes, they are obligate carnivores, but that does not mean that a little grain in the food is bad. Seriously, look at all the cats who survive and thrive on dry food with grain as the first ingredient? For the last 25 years!

Now some cats seriously didn’t do well on that, and probably all cats would have been better served with more meat, protein and water in their diet (which we are now so much more aware of). But even as a person who spends a lot of time and money feeding raw rabbit/chicken for a majority of the cat diet, I’m not going to lose my shit over a little bit of fruit… or vegetable… or even rice/grain.

I know Science Diet is unpopular with lots of folks, but our cats have done well on it - our old man will be 16 years old this summer.
We feed SD dry and once a day the two cats - both of whom are small, just 7 or 8 pounds or so - share a 3.3 ounce can of SD wet beef or chicken.
Works for them!

I have devised a scoring system for wet cat foods based on my cats’ tastes… I’ve listed all the different foods I’m trying and grade them either “NOM”, “MEH”, or “NOPE” as we go along. So far, the most expensive Lamb Tripe? was the biggest NOPE… going to pick up some Wild Calling today.

My fat (but slimming down!) show cat (British Shorthair) gets Weruva due to its low fat/high protein content. My other cat without teeth is doing well on Canidae after getting hot spots on EVO 95.

Wild Calling is a great food! My cats have done well on it (although they’re generally not super picky.)

The biggest NOM around here is Tiki Cat. I don’t do much fish (so the cats give it the hairy eyeball) but the chicken with egg is my go-to “come on, please just EAT” food. They all go to town on it.

It does cost a small fortune, though, so perhaps not realistic as an every day food :sigh:

Report from Juliet on the Soulistic I’ve mentioned in an earlier post: two paws up. She’s doing great on it. And at just over $1 a pouch all in with the autoship, it’s not terribly priced. (Was something like $1.69 PLUS tax in the store, so autoship definitely the way to go.)

Fancy Feast - only the classic flavors that don’t have chunks or sauce. I stick to salmon, chicken, and turkey and she does well on that. At one point or another I tried all the expensive organic stuff and she turned up her nose at it all. Figures.

Fancy Feast and Friskies (only not the Friskies varieties that have cheese; cheese is dairy and cat’s don’t need dairy, IMO). I would feed other brands that cost about the same, but since Purina now owns Friskies, the only other brands I see at my stores are the pricey ones and I don’t think they’re any better than Fancy Feast and Friskies. I miss Kal-Kan and Puss-n-Boots.

Remember the giant stinky can of what looked like processed fish parts?

Oh how the cats of my childhood adored that! And it probably didn’t have any grain in it and the mercury content was probably reasonably low LOL!!

I recently bought my cats some Authority canned food from PetSmart. They all LOve it, even the cat that previously did not like can food at all.

I’d put it about on par with Fancy Feast. All meat, but all by products. No grains or other stuff. Not bad for the price–less than FF.

my kitten likes grain-free Wellness wet food and Merrick dry(“crunchies”). He gets the dry as an extra because he’s still a growing boy My last cat lived to be a healthy old age–19! on Wellness.

My last cat and my current cat have both had grain-free restricted diets, so they’ve primarily been on Weruva’s Cats in the Kitchen line for canned. My last two cats actually were on canned food alone for the last few years of their life, and Weruva was the best bang for my buck, plus the pet store would let me order a case at a discount. I’ve also ordered it online.

Purina fancy feast cat food is my favorite treat food - there are whole chunks of chicken, turkey and beef flavors etc. My cats have always gone completely bonkers for anything in that line.

Canned food in general is more spendy than dry per serving, but there are a few brands that come in the bigger cans like dog food (Weruva is one of them). If she’s been doing well on Blue Buffalo it should be a pretty easy transition, but I’ve always mixed the two together for at least a few weeks until they get used to having only canned and not feeling hungry all the time.

My cats love Weruva Cats in the Kitchen, almost all flavors. I feed that, along with Fancy Feast classic turkey and giblets and beef. Go figure…beef.
