What makes one a Dressage Queen?

Exaaaactly. For example, “Hunter Princess”.

I’m the only dressage rider at an upscale hunter/jumper barn. I self identify as a DQ only because I’m it… I’m certainly the poorest in the barn but I love my bling.

Some of us have a taste for social satire and humor with a bit of bite to it. Some of us don’t. I guess.

OK— thought about this more and came up with another perspective on being a DQ . . . . .

FWIW, I have competed in two other disciplines besides dressage: eventing and competitive trail riding. This Fall, we went on this awesome 6 day ride. It involved riding in an all-purpose or jump saddle, through a variety of wooded trails (some very steep, narrow sections, some wider with less terrain) and some rides on the beach.

I realized partway through the trip that my favorite part (by far) was when we did trot sets on the beach, and I asked the horse I was riding, to work from behind into my hands, and got this lovely (much improved) trot. Then I kind of realized that probably makes me a DQ. That was more fun (to me) than negotiating the trails, or doing a brisk hand-gallop on a trail in the woods. A rider that prefers to have a horse on the aids and enjoys when they use their body more athletically. Not everyone likes to ride like that. Some riders like the adrenalin filled part—galloping, or going over big jumps, etc. Some people enjoy time with their horse when the reins are looped just moseying along the trail. A couple of my fellow riders do not enjoy the “fussiness” of dressage work— they say it’s just too nit-picky for them. They are not wrong, and I am not right----we just get enjoyment out of different activities with our horses.

So maybe that’s a DQ too! Many ways to define it.

I love satire and humor when it’s funny. I dislike greatly anyone making fun of others and attempt to describe it as funny. It’s not.

But you’re entitled to make a personal attack on those who point it out. I guess it makes you feel better.

Touchy much people?

All my life I have ridden at mixed barns, so I’m used to sharing an arena, no problem to flat around jumps, barrels, the roping dummy…

Last year I felt that I was turning into a DQ…getting frustrated that I couldn’t ride a 20m at B, and especially ticked off at not being able to ride a centre line. Then there was the advent of the Vaulting club, and the curved lines of kids running up to the dummy to practice their mounting…that one I did mention!

Sharing with the jumpers, I got over it…their season starts before mine, so I don’t NEED the space.

Just saying there maybe a little amount of DQ in all of us…

OH yes, couldn’t believe that I nearly had a melt down because I couldn’t find the ‘right’ gloves to wear for a visiting instructor…I had gloves, just not the right ones.

The DQ is the owner who tells the saddle fitter that they really want to get a (*******) saddle because Lauren was riding in one in BNT’s clinic and it just seemed to fit her beautifully and given that her Claudius is built much like her Lorenzo we really should try one.

The saddle fitter replies, deadpan - You have two in your tack room already.

This thread did go downhill fast.

The actual QUEEN, who rides, can rival anyone for turnout and elegance on formal occasions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYjC3hKpSx8

She rides beautifully.

I’ll quote myself to add that this is a true story, and how I came to own one of the two

I live in LA. We’re probably the land of DQs being by Hollywood. Our barn owns it. We laugh about how we must match our horse and each other.
The other trainers and disciplines at our facility joke about us DQ’s strutting around. Deep down our group mostly rides low priced off breed horses and spend more time making sure our used saddles are well fitted and that our footing is safe for the horses. On the rhinestoned surface we probably look pretty pretentious but we’re having fun with our barn buddies and enjoying the heck out of our horses.
Call us DQ’s, we have fun with it.

I did find a solution to the DQ that rides around the arena like she owns it and tries to plow you over! Start flying changes with your young horse who then sometimes finds it necessary to charge off out of control on his own in order to show me that he CAN do them…lmao Being the out of control rider makes everyone give way
