What price point for a leather shipping halter?

Our barn uses the plastic zip ties to attach the nylon cross ties with the panic snaps to the metal rings on the wall. We use two per cross tie (four per pair of ties). They give fairly easily though, but are dirt cheap when bought in quantity. (My horse actually knows exactly how to break them by grabbing a cross tie in his teeth and yanking when he thinks he’s been standing on the cross ties too long.) If you increase the number of ties used, the harder they are to break. But they definitely give when a horse panics.

For a leather halter, definitely Fincham’s - been buying theirs for almost 40 years. Excellent quality and if it’s not yearling sales time, they’ll do the brass nameplate and attach it while you wait.

I’ve also used just an ordinary nylon halter converted to breakaway style by the addition of a small leather piece at the crown. (Just like the ones already made that way except I just had the leather portion riveted in place. You could probably have a saddler use a Chicago screw instead of a rivet if you wanted, and have spare leather inserts.) And they did work properly. However, these days, and with current horse, I prefer solid leather halters.

I just spent ~$75/head, including shipping, on the Quillin halters I linked previously. They were having a sale. But straight up, they’re only ~$80.

Their turnout halters are less expensive.

Repairs are surprisingly inexpensive through them, and the single halter that a horse broke tore the crown. Easy to order a new crown. Make sure to get a halter with a double buckle crown.

I’ve used Quillin halters on and off for my trustworthy horses for probably close to 20 years. Those that are likely to sit back and test wear nylon.

eta: if you’re looking for something just less expensive, this has a double buckle crown, looks decent and is just over forty bucks with the 20% discount COTH1.

I’m assuming the OP is in Canada if she knows about Fincham’s. That $80. Quillin’s halter will have a minimum of 30% added to the price on their website plus shipping costs in U.S $ to get it to Canada. Walsh halters are a minimum of $130. Cdn. tax not included. A top of the line Fincham’s halter will be around $100. (plus tax) with a nameplate. Do the sensible thing and go to Fincham’s - shop local! (Plus IMHO, their halters are much nicer than Walsh’s! I haven’t seen a Quillin’s to compare, but I suspect the Fincham’s products would not be put to shame. If it breaks, they do excellent repairs that are very reasonably priced.)

I’m not in Ontario but I am in Canada, and one of the previous posters mentioned Fincham’s. Googled and liked what I saw. And yes I was thinking $ can when I was pricing the Walsh

Since you’re in Canada- Greenhawk’s Connemara halters are 40% off during their sale (starts Thursday). These hold up really well, break in and become much softer than the Walsh ones, and at a great price when you get them on sale! No issues with the hardware, and there is a big difference in leather from the cheapest to the second cheapest halters

It was after hardware broke on a Connemara halter at a very inconvenient moment that I went back to the Fincham’s halters. The Connemara ones are absolute junk in comparison to the Fincham’s and not worth the money IMHO.

I wouldn’t expect a good quality halter to break. IME, they don’t. I’ve had several Fennell’s halters, both turnout halters and show halters and a horse who didn’t always tie. Her Fennell’s halter had an oval ring under the chin when she died - it started out round. The leather held and the hardware held for several years (periodically someone would forget and tie her fast).

If your in Canada, order a Freedman’s leather halter. They are in Canada and beautiful. At similar price point as the others.

Kimstar- the Connemara definitely are not super high quality but they are like $40 this weekend. I’ve yet to have anything break on mine (have a few), and I’m not gentle on them!

I wouldn’t expect a good quality leather halter to break under normal usage, but I would expect any leather halter to snap in a true accident or panic situation. That is indeed the rationale for using them in trailers!

As far as Greenhawk house brands like Connemara . . . meh. If I’m going to upgrade from my Ger-Ryan I will go for one of the top quality brands mentioned here. I’ve got something to use in the meantime while I shop. BTW, priced a Walsh today, it was $ 139 Can.
