What sort of auger (or, gulp, by hand?) do you recommend?

I refer to them as 2-person torture devices after my brother and I used them several times as teenagers. NEVER again.

Skid steer with auger attachment, or hire it out.

It depends a LOT on your soil, and exactly WHAT sort of fence or posts you are putting in. Some types of soil are EASY to dig decent holes by hand. Some types are HARD. So that would very much effect what sort of tools you need. And how many posts you are talking about. We have a pounder for our tractor, but sometimes I put them in by hand… it’s easier that putting the pounder onto the tractor, if the soil is easy digging. If it’s a tough area, machines are the answer. If you don’t have one, you either buy or rent one, or hire someone who is in the business and has these tools. You have to decide which of these options is best for you and your situation.

Well my original post was pretty detailed about all of what you mentioned
