What to use on the "crud" on legs??

My horse has recently developed the waxy build up of “crud/gunk” on the fronts of his hind cannon bones. Hopefully that is descriptive enough. Usually when I see this forming on any of my horses a good very gentle curry to lift off the stuff and then I shampoo the legs with some sort of shampoo that helps prevent fungus/bacterial infections making sure their legs get good and dry afterward. This usually clears things up within a week.

For this particular horse he is currently recovering from a ligament injury/surgery and his leg is wrapped 24/7. Unless he is being bathed or drying from the bath the leg is wrapped. Does anyone have any sprays or leave on treatments that they have used that are safe to use under a wrap? I really wish his leg could have light and fresh air but that is just not in the cards at the moment.

Shampoo containing benzoyl peroxide, when you can.
Ignoreit for now–likely bothers you way more than your horse.

Could he be kicking at or rubbing his sheath? Has he had it cleaned out recently with bean removal? That would be my guess as to where the gunk is coming from, as opposed to his legs producing gunk. (YMMV.)

If you just want to gently clean the legs, Ivory dish soap is very mild, and rinses off completely. This is what my vet recommended for one of my horses who currently has scratches. We either air dry the leg while hand grazing, or use the blower option on the horse vacuum (which the horse loves!).

Cannon keratosis. It can’t really be cured, just managed. My mare had it really bad when I got her, it looked like scars from being caught in a fence or something similar. Using a dandruff shampoo with coal tar will help. In the summer, I put Corona on it and let it sit overnight, which softens it up so I can curry it off without causing bleeding. I wouldn’t really worry about it until you can remove the wraps.

Cannon keratosis - shampoo like Ghazzu said (I use Head & Shoulders) and start currying his legs a few times a week.

A vet recommended this to a friend who then suggested it for a horse I was riding at the time. His was bad–long term, bulged out, missing hair. Helped a lot.

My horse gets it on the backs of his hind legs. I curry it off really well with a hard plastic curry, then wash with Betadine scrub or a medicated shampoo. Once it’s dry, I put body powder (generic Gold Bond) on it. The key is keeping it dry and with as much air flow as possible, although since he needs to be wrapped that’s not possible. I’d change the pillow wrap to a freshly washed one for every wrap change too.

Its surprising to me that more horse people haven’t discovered the product that clears up cannon keratosis in 1-2 days. It is called Equiderma Lotion. It can be rubbed on the cannons to prevent the crud from coming back. Race track grooms are all using it and call it the “blue stuff”. It is only in certain states, otherwise you need to order it on the equiderma website. If you happen to be in Maryland, pm me and I will tell you where to buy it.

The best thing I have found for this are the Zephyr’s Garden Products. Even though it’s not a fungus, their anti-fungal spray works wonders on it. Also, the calm and clean shampoo really helps. My old guy gets gunk on his legs as well, and these keep it under control, sometimes I also use the anti-fungal salve if I know its going to be gross and muddy, it seems to protect his legs from getting bumpy.

I use plain ole MTG and it’ll be gone in a day or so.

I second the Equiderma Lotion. Got rid of my guys crud in just a few days. Whenever I see it start to come back I put some of the lotion on and its gone the next day.

Tea tree oil works great

Canon keratosis yes, but I have had good results using scratches type ointment on it. I used to mix up chlorhexidine cream, desitin and cortisone cream, but have found that Equishield CK cream comes out the same as far as cost goes and is very very effective. Maybe mine wasn’t a true keratosis.

MTG

Cures my guy’s crud in 1-2 days.

The trick is to stop it early by keeping an eye on it, as well as thorough grooming. There are a number of treatments that work well, if done meticulously.

Oil and vinegar mixed in a spray bottle. or white vinegar alone. Cheap and effective

Head & Shoulders shampoo per my vet’s recommendation

Another vote for MTG. Scurf will be gone in a day or so. Not sure if you can wrap over it though.

I used tea tree oil facial wash from the body shop. Lathered a little on, let it sit a couple minutes, then rinse. Only had go do it three times and the gunk cleared right up.
