What's considered too big to ride a pony?

Ever notice the really BNPony trainers never yell at the kids but the Pony goes better when they are ring side??? Acts like a sheayt in the schooling ring but turns into the perfect princess the instant trainers foot hits the ground off the golf cart??? Ever think about that?

They recognize a threat when they see it or hear that soft barely audible growl they know so well. Yelling is not necessary;)..

But I am NOT kidding in the least and I know some of the very best in the country-they know all about consequences and who delivers them. And it aint that cutsy munchkin leasee du jour with the big bows.

thanks. i always look forward to your insight on this board, find eight…

I think like once a month is fine… Remember these are horses…

Embarrassingly, I had to get on a (fat!) small and school the crap out of it after it dumped it’s little girl (very dirtily too) in a lesson. I didn’t have another kid good enough to ride him, and I was the only one at the barn at the time. :o I’m 6’0 and at the time was about 160lbs

Pony went  the minute my butt was in that saddle, and it was very surprised to get a whomping from me after it pulled the same dirty stop. It only tried that once lol.

I only did the bare minimum with him, but he sure didn’t try that one again. I didn’t feel good about it, but I felt even worse about the kid being dumped and the pony potentially getting away with dumping her again.

I also regularly schooled the larges on the flat, (the biggest of the larges!) and they were fine

leg too long for pony?

I wonder if I look like a total goof On my pony. I’m 5’1 and 110 lbs pony is probably 13.2 hh or so. Delicate build. Not sure of her exact height but that’s close. She’s almost 9 years old. Want to post a picture but I can’t figure out how to…

And here is her with less muscle and me with 10 extra lbs https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=4516480640609&id=1548510058&set=a.1002215066166.286.1548510058&source=43
I know this is an old thread so thanks so much for any feedback!!!

We don’t have permission to see the photos. I would start a new thread about it though, you will get more views.

OP, this is a 5 year old thread about a Pony kid who is probably doing 3’6" Juniors by now. Many COTHers won’t even open it. Start a new thread for better response.

Pony Club’s weight rules for mounted games, which I like to use as a general guideline, are:

small - 117lbs
medium - 140lbs
large - 190lbs (I think, I have never had a kid or pony close to not making that one)

So, I think that trainer was probably fine for the smalls, just looked funny, and you should be fine for your daughter’s pony.

The general rule I have read is approximately 20% of the horses weight, but really no more than that.

I have a 12’2 HH Welsh/Shetland that I will ride. Im am about 130lbs, and could carry me with ease. Also was jumping 3’ singles and oxers with him. I haven’t done that in a few years, as he is coming 17 now and mostly totes small humans of the 7-13 year old variety.

Just my thought

Look at William Fox Pitt, I know he is an eventer and don’t see any ponies at rolex but he is very tall and what is cool about his riding is that even given his height he can ride these 16 hand horses and balance perfectly. But thats only half of the story there is the weight side of things too, and that IMO is just common sense.

I’m 5’1 and 80lbs so I guess I’m now my barn’s designated pony altitude-adjuster although I feel like a giant on 12hh ponies, they’re so much fun, though!
