How things change! It got crazy last night – had 4 puppies between morning and afternoon and then nothing. Got cleaned up and in bed and all of a sudden she’s having more! Spit out 4 more between 11 and 1AM! Had one big, beautiful male that was stillborn. Then this morning she had one that was stuck in the birth canal, so by the time it was out, it was gone. Went to fix her some breakfast in another room, wasn’t gone 3 minutes and came back and she was cleaning up another small female that was unresponsive. So, in all she had 10 and 7 are viable. I’m pooped! She is too, but thankfully she has alot of milk. I’m sure someone experienced could have done a better job, I’m not sure what else I could have done, stayed on top of it. Anyway, they are all noisy but it’s music for me!

Glad mom & babies are doing well.
It sucks when you loose one(or more) but most of the time there isn’t much you could have done to change the outcome.
Now where are those PICTURES!!!
Mommy Peanut, I have a photo, can I just email it to you? I just have it in my computer, not anywhere that a link would work. Thanks for asking!

TKR, so happy for you and your Momma!!
If you decide to breed again, or for anyone else who is, getting an ultrasound or radiograph during late pregnancy can be invaluable to know how many pups to expect. While its usually an “about 8” or “at least 4” can be all you need to know if she’s likely done or not.
OP, PMing you, would also love some pics! And to answer your forever ago question, ACD= Australian Cattle Dogs. My Dad was a GSD guy, had one when I was young. Went looking for a GSD at the shelter and wound up with a GSD/ cattle dog mix who turned out to be mostly Cattle Dog. Never lost my love of a great minded GSD though!
Yes, I did know we could x-ray to count puppies. In hindsight, I should have done that. I was not comfortable doing an x-ray on puppies in the belly, so I chose not to do so. I can see now why that was important. I was not as clear as I am now on the reasons to do so. Thanks for the explanation of ACD. Those a great dogs – a friend of mine recently lost her best buddy who was an ACD and it’s been a struggle for her to deal with his loss.

I certainly understand your hesitation to expose them to radiation. I want to clarify that in no way was I trying to criticize you, it’s very apparent you’re the type of person who does their homework and should be breeding!
I only mentioned it because you commented on experience breeding and I know it’s the only thing that could have potentially changed with an experienced repro vet. Just like with horses, they’re worth their weight in gold.
Also, had you called our ER clinic with your initial 4 puppies update we would have advised you the same as your vet. Sometimes our animals just like to keep us guessing. I have my fingers crossed for all 7 pups and mom!
