What's the big hype about grey's(and not the show)
Everybody wants to be Becky Holder rocking around with Courageous Comet. I don’t like grays myself, although I think I am buying one because I like him.
Not unless Becky’s groom is part of the package! Give me a plain bay, no white everytime, I like to sleep in the mornings.

You can’t ride color.

Nope. But if I’ve gotta write the checks for all of the expenses, I might as well like what’s hanging over the stall door and the jacket it’s wearing. I’ll choose a grey or dilute over plain bay, any day of the week, but then, I ride because it makes me happy. Not for a living and not for the accolades. Just fun.

True. When horse shopping, I was adamant about getting a bay. Fell in love with a gray.

speaking of greys just saw this guy posted on H/J

I might just up my prejudice for this guy. I am not attracted to greys. I love my warm earth tones.

Yup, gorgeous!

People just like grey horses!

The Victorians believed that greying was premature aging and almost bred the colour out of TBs. Now Newmarket has an annual ‘Grey Horse Handicap’ where the entire field is grey. It is very popular and a great spectacle.

Dun horses have a premium price in UK eventing.

The grey just has one of those small, demi-lune shaped poop pillows for his head; the chestnut uses one of those full body poop pillows that you wrap yourself around. Every day I face the same thing–a whole hindquarter soaked in semi-dried poop from the hip to the hoof. And, on top of it, she hates being groomed (he loves it).

I don’t particularly care for greys… so naturally I bred my mare to a homozygous gray stallion! The only greys I like are the nice dark dapple greys that fade very very slowly… so naturally the resulting filly went grey on her very first shed!

I also don’t like chestnuts… which explains why I own 2 chestnuts…

But then, I’m also apparently unusual because I dislike pintos and Appies. Dislike isn’t exactly accurate–I think they’re hideously ugly and would never consider owning one. (And before anyone gets all “I have an Appy and he’s super talented and smart and wonderful”–I know there’s nothing wrong with colored horses. They can be fantastically talented and so on, I just don’t like the coloring.)

Give me a nice bay and I’m happy.

Tell me about this poop pillow of which you speak. i am clueless.

“But probably, if I had to pick one thing that I had to hang my hat on, I would want the horse that I was going to buy to have a face that I would enjoy seeing poked over the stall webbing every morning, waiting for breakfast.” – Jimmy Wofford

I have three horses, none are a gray. I love grays but with mine being on 24/7 turn-out and only run-in sheds there is no way I’d have the time, energy or tolerance to keep a gray clean. My chestnut is already going to give me enough trouble. He lays down and naps in the biggest mud puddles he can find. If weren’t wearing a winter blanket no part of him would be clean. I am having my DH build me a run-in with a gate on it so I can convert it in to a stall. Because living where I do its no less than a 3hr drive to events. I have to be able to wash my horse the day before and keep him clean over night. So a stall and a big slinky, I’m thinking pink might shame him in to staying clean.

Poop pillows:

Demi-lune pillow (imagine made of poop) – used by grey gelding

Full-body pillow (" ") – used by chestnut mare

I’ve had a couple of beautiful SHINY greys. But would always be my last choice for color. Despite the fact that all my horses have chrome galore right now, my perfect horse in my head is a dark, solid colored one. Grooming for yourself and any attempt to compete a clean grey in freezing winter temperatures with no heated barn spoils the concept of owning one pretty quickly. At least for me.

So how do they stay on?

She’s using "poop pillow’ as a euphemism for them laying in their own poop in the stall/paddock  One usually just lays his head on a pile and the other tends to lay his whole body in it

 I was kind of wondering

Thanks for explaining, Mosey! I wasn’t sure whether Painted Hunter was being ironic or not… Don’t worry, Painted, we’ve all been there.

I have had a chestnut tb mare, a dark bay TB gelding, and a grey tb mare (my current event horse). I didn’t go looking for any of them, I just happened to start riding each of them and then ended up buying them (at their respective times). I have to say, my grey mare is the cleanest of all of them! I still have my gelding, who is now retired. If there is any spot of mud in the pasture, he’s rolled in it, and also gotten himself full of burrs. My chestnut mare also loved mud. My grey mare will roll on grass if she is able to or somewhere dry preferably. In the 6 years I have owned her, she has never been covered in dried mud/dirt, but I couldn’t tell you how many times I cleaned that off the other two!

At shows she does not lay down until late at night, so of course I have some green to clean off in the morning (once out of her ear…thanks mare!), but it actually comes off of her pretty easily. If it is too cold for a full bath, I can spot clean her with mostly water with just a tiny bit of shampoo and it comes right off. She does have a nice shiny coat for a gray though!

She does have one little melanoma under her tail, but it’s been there for a few years and has not gotten bigger so the vet is not concerned about removing it or anything. Other than that she’s good! She’s 11 now, but I’m hoping for many more years before I have to worry about them. God knows she’s accident prone enough that she’ll find another creative way to off herself before the melanomas get her!!
