What's with all the monensin-contaminated feed?

I’m in Wisconsin and wanted to know about mill for TC in this area.

Thanks for contacting Triple Crown. The mill where your feed is made in Milton, WI has a separate line and mixing system for medicated feeds - so horse feed made at this facility would not come in contact with rumensin/Monensin.

Fumonisin is a mycotoxin which is a grain mold. Most of our formulations are “grain free” but we do test incoming ingredients for mycotoxins and only work with approved vendors for grain products.

Our feed mills have comprehensive Quality Assurance programs in place, which are overseen by a dedicated QC Supervisor at each location. The sequencing protocols demand that feeds are produced in a particular order to prevent any cross-contamination that could cause potential safety issues with the feed. If the label says the feed is intended for horses, rest assured we are confident the feed is safe as intended. Our mills have been HACCP-certified for over a decade, the procedures in place are ahead of the curve and not yet mandated by the federal government. The mills are also certified under AFIA’s Safe Feed/Safe Food, and compliant with federal Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

Please let me know how I can assist further.

Thanks!

Are horse feeds mentioned in HCCP standards ?

HACCP is not required for animal feed, so any mills that comply with it are do so on a voluntary basis.

Just saw this morning that Elisa Wallace has decided to end her partnership with ADM:

A fine example of a true horsewoman!

Can you get Ranch-Way in your area? I heard from a rep today, and while they do produce medicated feeds for other species, they have a dedicated medication-free mill line for their equine feeds. I haven’t yet decided to make a switch (still looking into other options), but that is better than TC can do in my area.
Fergs – interesting info about Ranch-Way Feeds. Have you decided which feed you’re going to switch to? I live in western Colorado and have been feeding ADM Ultra Fiber with good results. But I do not like the way ADM has handled the monensin issue. It’s time for me to change feeds and be done with ADM! Ranch-Way is readily available here.

Ranch-Way has a link to this video from Sept. 2014 about their feed mill on their home page. At about 4 minutes in, they talk about the hand-out station where vitamins, mineral, probiotics, and medications (highly supervised, medications are logged to the gram, etc…) are added. No mention of a separate line for equine feeds. This info doesn’t seem consistent with what you were told.

I wish I could believe what we are being told.
