What's your dream cross?

Hey guys!

We’re putting together our Spring Breeding Issue and would love to know what everyone’s dream breeding cross would be of currently or recently competing horses.

What stallion? What mare? Why? And For what discipline?

Want to play–add your vote to this thread or email it to lisa@chronofhorse.com.

Thanks! Molly

I’m really loving the Irish Sport Horses we are breeding…pure TB’s crossed with 1/2 or 3/4 TB ISH’s resulting in 3/4 or 7/8 TB, Irish Sport Horses. We’ve done it both ways…1/2 TB/ISH stallion to pure TB mare and 1/2 or 3/4 TB, ISH mare to pure TB stallion. They come out looking and moving like athletic pure TB’s with the Irish disposition/temperament.

My mare just foaled her 2 1/2 weeks ago. Joplin is a LusitanoXHan/TB out of my favorite mare Anna. This is the 3rd generation mare line for me. The big plus is I got a buckskin!!

I saw Benetton Dream 3 yrs ago, fell in awe of him. I own/bred Duet MF (DonPrincipe/Rotspon) who was. the USDF “Traveling Trot” winner in 2011 and an Elite Hanoverian mare. She has been competing up tto 3rd level as a 6 yr old,was ridden by Jan Brink in the 2014. GDFNA. I feel this cross will be atop FEI dressage prospect.

LOL, I wouldn’t mind having one by Gribaldi out of Lominka by Glendale.

The pedigree would look like this one -

It would have been awesome to have Secretariat-Genuine Risk produce a live foal for racing!

I bought her!

I like the offspring of a lot of stallions out there, but the 3 years I was looking at youngsters before buying her, I specifically noted I kept going back to offspring of Oskar. Because he’s pretty refined he was mostly bred to large mares, some of high quality and some not, but they almost all had really good hind legs.

I love my TB, and like a hot horse with a TB type of mind. I just wanted to have the improved natural suspension and thrust that a purpose bred horse would have. So I wanted a horse with a lot of TB in it. I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of first generation out of a TB though wouldn’t have ruled that out, and I wanted the mare to be smaller.

So my Oskar filly out of a 3/4 TB Trakehner mare fit the bill pretty darned well! She’s so fun and really showing she’s pretty darned talented. She will not be a young horse candidate - she’s a late bloomer. But once she’s ready for upper levels… well, who knows, but she could be FAR nicer than what I thought I was looking for in a first purpose-bred horse for myself!

Flexible

Through the world of CHF I met a woman who had a very well bred Selle Francais mare who was nearing her retirement from showing as a adult hunter. She had posted about her and whether she was something that should be bred. I was very enthusiastic about her and was offered her when she retired that spring. I am a pedigree wonk, since I am mainly an Irish Draught Horse breeder and Irish Draught Horse pedigrees are pretty short I can satisfy my inner pedigree fiend by making choices for Lena Mail. She is line bred Ibrahim with exceptional TBs in her pedigree(Laudanum, Hand In Glove and Precipitation). My dream is to breed her to Flexible to produce jumpers and eventers. Of course in the mean time Flexible became Champion of the World and I can’t realistically afford to bred to him any longer but she is a very nice mare and I will enjoy creating other dreams with her. My dream cross would have been Hohenstein-DeNiro…sadly both gone and Hohenstein frozen is like playing the Mega Lotto…very bad odds of winning.

I agree with Marydell…Benetton Dream is a fabulous stallion. I just bought, today in fact, some Brentano II frozen semen to one day use with my Rotspon-Davignon Mare. Then hopefully I too will have my very own Benetton Dream:)

At this point in my life, it’s more about the produce from my own farm and bloodstock. Knowing what I know about my mares, and at this point in time I am very content with what has been I have or have bred, here are some crosses that would appeal to me:

With Panache - TB - Murray’s Law-Metierofthefield x Firm Man - I would love to cross
with Epsom Gesmeray. Her two foals have shown such talent over fences and a love for it and knowing her pedigree is full of proven, old TB jumping lines, it would be of great interest for me. Laudanum and Hand In Glove would be awesome or the Gem Twist clone perhaps.

Pure Preppy - TB - Da White Judge-Pure Innocence x Accused - having produced 3 from her, all wonderful - she will go back to Oskar II this year, (God willing). Her filly from this cross is amazing and a keeper.

Daring Misdemeanor - TB - Murray’s Law-Dranabel x Believe the Queen - insanely wonderful producer! I’d love to have her bred to a really proven in top competition and producing stallion. I’d love to use Sandro Hit, Jazz, Buddenbrock or even Oskar II. Totalis is out of our price range. She doesn’t belong to me anymore, but a close friend owns her and we confer.

Playbook TKR - Trakehner - Oskar II-Pure Preppy x Da White Judge - love this DIVA mare!! I would use Buddenbrock or Lord Luciano from the Trakehner lines. If I could use Enrico Caruso, Kostolany or Gribaldi, that would be fabulous! At some point I will probably use my frozen Murray’s Law and Master Huntsman with her. I can dream! She’s not going anywhere, LOL.

Avant Garde TKR - TB - Strong Performance - With Panache X Murray’s Law - she’s a compilation of alot of generations I had planned to keep. But I don’t jump and she loves it with alot of talent and doesn’t care much for dressage, so she will be sold. If I was going to breed her – I would love to use Laudanum or Hand In Glove or the Gem Twist clone. Love using the Thoroughbred jumping lines!!!

Dim The Lights - Starlight-Daring Misdemeanor x Murray’s Law (GOV) -
planning to own this one!~ Have already decided to use Belissimo on her.
She is special!

I have been loving your posts of Oskar babies on facebook! I am hoping to get some good shots of Ellie to share with you and Anissa. She looks so much better in person than any photos I have gotten of her yet!

Blume, something very close to this exists in the US, in California at Sunsprite Warmbloods in Temecula. A De Niro out of a German-import Caprimond - Weltmeyer dam. That De Niro is now producing foals herself. And that particular farm actually used Hohenstein frozen SUCCESSFULLY  Never give up!!

A Strong Gale mare crossed on Alydar

My dream cross would be A Fine Romance with Headley Britannia.
I love her.
He is proven to produce upper level eventers - sound, athletic horses with great gallops and jumping ability out of a wide variety of mares - with a mare with the heart, determination and athleticism of Headley Britannia?
That would be something to dream of.

I’m not trying to be cheesy/she’s not for sale, but I couldn’t be happier with the result of a cross I did already and would repeat if I still had access to the horses: Landfriese II x Galoubet A. She can go either direction (dressage or jumping) and has the best mind, yet remains very responsive (just super fun to ride).

Landfriese II is deceased, so I guess a “dream cross” would be to breed the Galoubet A daughter to Lagoheidor (both are Landadel sons). http://www.sporthorseauctions.com/AHS_SSA/Lagoheidor/LAGOHEIDOR.pdf. I am very interested in this dual talent stallion, and I just love Landadel. Plus I get that Furioso blood on the bottom with him that I always wanted. He produces international offspring in both sports (seriously, what am I doing? I should go buy a mare by him, this is a dangerous thread).

Since the Landfriese II/Galoubet A is what I have, and Lagoheidor is a bit close in bloodline, I would really like to breed her to Epsom Gesmeray (for the Alme cross and a good “type” cross) goal would be a top jumping foal. If I got what I anticipated, that would probably be a repeat breeding for her.

Going a completely different direction, and perhaps this is my “dream” cross because it is out-of-the box, expensive, and “for me to keep” I would like to breed her to Negro for a dressage foal (that could probably jump just fine too). Two extremely different stallions, but I’d be going for different things.

She is booked to Mezcalero already, and I am very excited about that as well (obviously). Should be a great cross. She is very blood in type and I like it on paper and type.

I’m just having so much fun with my mare under saddle that I’m struggling with breeding her…I’m starting to get the show bug again.

Fun thread!

Wow - I had not heard that De Niro was deceased. But then, I’ve been sort of preoccupied with other life issues lately. When did he cross the Bridge?

DownYonder, fear not. De Niro is fine  I think Blume meant Hohenstein and his sire Caprimond - they sadly are gone.

Thanks for the reassurance. I was afraid I was seriously out of the loop! I have so much respect for what that horse has accomplished in his life, and I would like to think he will be around for a while.

Blume – my dream cross is indeed Hohenstein/DeNiro and DeNiro/Hohenstein, the later of which I have 2, and I am totally graced by being owned (yes, I mean it that way!) by a magnificent daughter of Hohenstein himself. Right now we have a DeNiro/Hohenstein filly and a colt. In the immortal words from the great song out of Man of LaMancha – "To dream the impossible dream . . . " And I will keep dreaming . . . .
