Andies. Comfort plus. Brains, spirit, and then some.
In order of preference: 1) Standardbreds, 2) Thoroughbreds, 3) American Saddlebreds, 4) Arabians!
My favorite of all time is my Arabian/ Andalusian cross gelding, he is 16h grey with gorgeous arab head and andalusian body. Incredible mover and athletisism. Keeps up at the trot when my friends 17.2 hanovarian is cantering. Very smooth and adjustable to ride - jumps, dressage, hunting, very brave and smart. I would by another horse like him in a second.
I have also had ottb’s, arabs, paints, apps, morgans, a friesian, a holstiener, and a german riding pony. No breed predjudice here, a good horse is a good horse (although, it’s always fun when they come with spots).
Irish Draught.
I have had or cared for or ridden or all of the above a lot of horses - Arabs, TB, gaited breeds both American and Latin, warmbloods of various ilks, Saddlebreds, TWH, Morgans, AQHA, Appys, mustang (one), and a few heavy horse crosses. NOTHING is like our Irish horses, hands down.
Brains, ability, good correct gaits, soundness and the kindest disposition. All in one package. Crossed on a GOOD TB, you lighten them up a tad and keep all the good stuff.
At the later years of a longish life, I have found “my” breed.
I love TB’s, cant beat um. I also love TB crosses, sporthorse mixes, and the irish breeds. Love pretty much everything, but those are my fave. I really dont like arabs, I have met one or two arab crosses that were okay, but I really dont like them. I have found that they are very hot and hard headed.
Norwegian Fjords!
Brains, brawn, versatility, and heart you can’t beat!!
LUV my Connemara Pony! :)))
I’ve owned and ridden the gamut from Arabs to warmbloods (Hanoverian, Dutch, Traks) and love a good brain and temperament in any breed - but for my own personal preferences, I love my “blends” - my Trak/Arab mare who is by Happy Hour out of a Polish bred Arabian mare - sensitive in a good way, sane, utterly reliable and her willingness to try and figure out what the heck I want with a good attitude! She is developing into a great performer after already proven herself as a great producer - with two premium foals…my next favorite blend is her weanling son, by the welsh cob stallion North Forks Cardi - too soon to say of course, his talent as a dressage horse - but I couldn’t have wished for better in terms of movement, temperament and personality - he always manages to put a smile on my face. I’ve seen a few Welsh cobs lately that make me wish I had looked at this breed alot sooner for my own dressage goals.
How funny that only person included my favorite breed - Holsteiners… I guess if we asked this question on the hunter/jumper board, they would have been mentioned more… Anyway - love them!

TBs. Very smart, love to work, athletic, love their people and are fun to ride. A friend, who rides expensive warmbloods, was complaining about how stupid her horses were. I looked at her in amazement because I certainly haven’t had this experience with my TBs.
Out of the barn of 60 some horses where I ride, the TBs and Paints seem to be the most straightforward to ride.
Too bad TBs don’t have better marketing…

marketing?
Has to be arabs or arab crosses for me, although I also love working with Welshies, Morgans, etc. The problem with arabs is that they demand that their riders be as intelligent as they are, and will pull out all the stops to make this point crystal clear! Unfortunately for me I work mostly with TBs and Warmblood crosses these days but I never pass up the chance to catch a ride on one of those little dynamos.
I LOVE holsteiners!!! My little grey is a registered holsteiner imported from germany He is out of the “C” line his sire is clearway who is out of capitol. I love the holsteiners great big necks soooo stunning. Most of the holsteiners I know are actually rather hot headed which can be quite fun
My guy has quite the attitude anyways! Although sometimes I question if he is a lippizan because he can do theses leap/bucks that look quite similar to airs above ground… We have preformed this airs above ground in a dressage test unfortunatly the judge did not come out of the spanish riding school
Anyways I love holsteiners I think they are extremely athletic and stunning!!! I also love the attitudes they can have
I’m another fan if ISH!!! I have an amazing guy whom is a huge mover and (Iknow this is the dressage forum) an amazing jumper. They have the best mind of any horse I have been on (and that is alot!).
I have to say I am also a big Oldenburg fan as well.
Happy Hour seems to consistantly produce good minds.I haven’t heard of a bad one yet. I know adore mine !

I am hooked on Arabians, especially the Crabbet/CMK lines.[/QUOTE]
Yes! Love my Arab with Crabbet lineage
I lean towards favoring KWPN- but I love anything that has Roemer in the line regardless of what registry has approved the horse. Roemer passes on a fantastic work ethic. Maybe not the most flashy horses, but horses that love to try their hearts out and are steady as can be! I started with a son of his and now I have two five year olds that he is the grandfather.
Count me in with the Arabs and TBs…I’ve worked with a lot of different breeds and while I’ve ridden dressage-bred warmbloods and realized it is a lot easier on them than an Arab or an OTTB, I still would rather ride one of them. If that means I’m not going to the Olympics, so be it. It was a long shot anyway. :sigh:
I’m another Morgan lover. I agree that it’s hard to find tall ones. I got lucky in that mine’s a freakish 16.2 and absolutely gorgeous. They’re out there if you really look hard. I didn’t even know what a Morgan was until I started riding at my now-old barn (weird to say that… I just moved barns yesterday…) and just fell in love with them. They are just so smart and willing to learn and they love love love attention. It’s a long crazy story how I got mine, but he’s my baby and he’s mine for life.
standardbreds! and hanoverians.
i currently own a standardbred and he is WONDERFUL. learns quickly, always tries his hardest, has a trot to die for and a rocking chair canter. he is very versatile and people always ask me if he is a warmblood. i would love to have a pinto one!
i have ridden many many breeds and also love tb’s and hanoverians.
