What's your go-to topical for cuts?

Usually triple antibiotic ointment, novlasan (sp?) ointment, or SWAT if I need to keep flies off. I can’t for the life of me understand why people continue to use Wonder Dust. They might as well throw flour on it.

Tri-Care and Desitin.

This is what I use and I love it! I found it to be much better than Corona for scrapes, topical rubs, etc. I keep a big tin of it at the barn and use it for everything.

After cleaning the area:

Corona, desitin, or aluspray. Just depends on what it is.

Cleaning is with saline, or hose water, or peroxide. Depending on where it is and how deep it is.

There’s actually some incredibly robust study on hypochlorous acid–which is what vetricyn is–in wound management. I never really gave it much credit until I had a massive, chronic wound and looked into the literature on management strategies:

So now it’s a solid part of my wound care toolbox. I use it to clean and flush.

On us or the horses??

On me I just wash it when I can.

For the horses I use Corona, Triple Antibiotic Ointment or a spray gel I have.

I always clean with betadine water down to tea color in a squirt bottle.

Then whatever ointment I can find to keep it from getting debris in it. I’ll wrap if possible to keep it clean.

I use silver sufadiazine cream, Manuka honey stuff, corona, Alushield. It really depends on where the wound is located and what stage it’s healing.

A combo of human Triple Antibiotic ointment/hemorrhoid ointment/40% zinc oxide paste.

Works on self-inflicted wounds, allergic reaction to bug bites, and scratches.

Diaper cream with the highest zinc content. I have used it for years on scrapes, fly bites, rubs, raw, even shallow cuts. Non stinging, keeps skin soft, seems to promote healing, keeps bugs off.
I have applied over a layer of triple ointment to keep bugs/flies off.

Thanks for sharing this link!

Interesting! I use Desitin on his pink nose skin for sun protection since its so much cheaper than sunblock and it stays on better. I didn’t think of it for wounds.

You’re welcome! My vet was also unaware of all this research, and enjoyed learning about it. Send yours both links!:grin:

my go-to is washing the wound with mild dish soap, spraying with Vetricyn, then coating with desitin as needed to keep moist.

For those still using peroxide, please take a moment to google wound healing… applying things like peroxide are doing a lot more harm than good! The work of Dr Dean Hendrickson is eye-opening - I had the pleasure of attending a lecture he did on current wound management practices back in March.

Bout to go stock up on Vetericyn for my chronic scratches horse that hasn’t resolved after multiple abx. Won’t hurt to try. Thanks for sharing.

But it IS still just dilute bleach.

No, not really:

Funny. I use Wonder Dust all the time on legs.

Clean with Betadine, spray with Vetericyn, air dry, spray with AluShield.

I use Wonder Dust on legs too. Usually just puff it on minor fresh knicks to stop any bleeding.

Vetricyn is my go-to for things that are beyond a puff of Wonder Dust.

Horseman’s Dream comes in later.

Those are my three must-haves.
