I just had to buy one of these for a new martingale I bought. Paid $7.00 from Amazon (needed it quickly). When it came in my husband asked what it was and how much I paid for it. He was shocked that I didn’t think that was a bad price. I agree, if you buy a $300 martingale they should throw in the darn thing for free.
If you are not using it for a show, and just need something that works at home you could make it yourself from a rawhide shoelace. Or even a little piece of tape. Or a rubber band. But, I think like a farm girl, practical not pretty. And it would get mentioned if I went to a lesson with something cobbed together. So these would be short term measures at best.
