Yes Mungin. That is what I meant. Damn fingers with a mind of their own.
Much missed.

I’ll have to point my mom to this thread - she rode at Boulder Brook I would guess in the late 40’s, early to mid 50’s. And sailed at Larchmont, I think. Don’t suppose anyone has any stories to tell about Ellen Flack from back in the day, eh??
I haven’t gotten to read this whole thread yet, but have we settled on a cutoff for the olden days?? I’ve always been more of an eventer and Pony Clubber, but was doing that in the 70’s and early 80’s.
Based on the “Best Jumper” thread, maybe if you saw Gem Twist show in person, not on Youtube?
My mother also showed at Boulder Brook in the 30s and 40s. She couldn’t believe it was still standing when I told her I went there a few years ago to look at some horses.
I also heard a funny story recently from someone who was at Boulder Brook in the early 40s. One of the other guys who worked there gave him a ride to work on his motorcycle, and wiped out in the driveway. The motorcycle passenger ended up with a broken leg that he thinks saved his life, since it prevented him from fighting in World War II!
Boulder Brook - Along with Leon, who always looked dapper with his jaunty hat, Abe & Randy, there was a groom named Pat and another very tall woman groom who kept her barrel racer there. There was another groom in the way back aisle that we called “Siberia”, who rode side saddle and showed at the Garden, I believe. Adding to the list of memories of BoulderBrook (and I think Hillaire, which had been Secor, prior) anyone one remember Charlie, another groom? I remember bringing him six packs of Schaefer Beer as a tip. (at his request, I might add) Imagine a young kid coming to the barn with a six pack to tip a groom?? Of course that was his beer of choice, because the Pedersen family owned Schaefer beer. What the heck were my parents thinking?!?
So if I remember Idle Dice and Number 1 Spy I’m in? I was sort of on sabbatical during Gem Twists day, alas.
Idle Dice has been mentioned a lot on that thread. I think you’re good to go!
How about Damuraz?? Mighta made an impression on me for the wrong reasons, but still, tucked in my brain in some WIHS/Capitol Center memories.
Who had that one? I want to say Mark Laskin?
Bigger than life charachters from the “old” days . . . .
Does anyone remember: “Peach”, who worked for Caroline Clark, and was always SPOTLESS in his button-down shirts and khakis? Smiling “Hambone”, who worked for Christian Curry? Elegant “Herringbone” who worked for Micheal Matz? Peter, who worked for Ri-Arm? And all of them, glad to teach what they knew . . . .
olden days
Fair Judy, I remember Wilkie Collins. Did you ride at Ralph Petersen’s?
Last I knew, Herringbone was working for Michael Matz again with the racehorses. That was a few years ago, though.

Oh, I remember Charlie! Every time someone fell off, he demanded Shaefer! He got it, too. If you passed him in the barn and you hadn’t brought it yet, he would chant “Schaaa-fer”. i brought him about two cases in the two years I rode there. I also remeber Marie, the barrel racer, but not as fondly. Some of the horses back in Siberia were from a summer camp in MA. Every June they would get picked up and go back to camp. Early one morning the horses were picked up and they accidentally took Marie’s horse which she was hiding back there secretly. (the place was NOT a tight ship at that point). Leon stood there as they led the horse away, but somehow didn’t notice (ha, ha). You have never seen anyone as furious as Marie when she got to work. She ripped a gigantic chalk board off the wall and slammed in on the floor in the aisle. Leon just stood there shrugging, as if he was mystified by the whole spectacle. She had to go pick up the horse in MA. It was hilarious. (Sorry, sounds mean, but she had it coming.)
The Budweiser Clydesdales used to be stabled back in Siberia when they came through once a year. That was really cool. I remember being amazed by their HUGE halters hanging on the stalls.
Are there any riders from Round Hill in Greenwich ? I think it’s still open, however might be private now. Are we just old or are the "younger " riders making their own memories at barns now. It all seemed so innocent back in the day . Having said that, I saw a lot of bamboo wrapped in barbed wire and gentlemen wearing street hats in lieu of helmuts. Who won the jumper class? The rider who left the rail up when it reached the top of the standards! The grooms were indeed the best who loved what they did and took pride in their horse’s turnout.
I grew up in CT before moving to England and rode off and on between 1979-1986, I never owned or leased a horse but I tried to get to be near them whenever possible.
I had my first lessons with a lady called Marilyn who was based in Wilton (I think) and I think her place was called Stoneyside Farm (?) I can remember each of her horses so well, but I think she was winding down her business by the time I rode there.
Later I used to go with a friend to her lessons in New Canaan, a place called Bonfire Field Farm, lady was called Sally. She also had lovely horses, but I didn’t ride much. I used to try and help but was probably more of a hindrance!
Lastly, I worked at Ox Ridge, I was so thrilled when I got the job (prob around 84/85) but because I was an idiot I messed it up and was fired (quite understandably)
I remember accompanying my friend and my cousin to some horse shows, Comstock Farm? Mounted Troop? Silvermine? They all seem to ring some bells but I could be well off mark.
PS I also remember Idle Dice, saw him at Ox Ridge (but before I worked there) so I’m old enough to be from the Olden Days! Yeay!
The grey horse ridden by the pumpkin headed streaker was owned by Leonard King - Devon’s President.
Trained by Carol Hoffman Thompson.
The rider worked for August Busch got undressed in the men’s room at the bottom of the ramp, and Seaweed held the gate open.
And when the deed was done the Horse Show Committee went crazy and looked through the tents trying to find the horse ! Luckily for everyone the horse was tucked in his stall and munching hay when the officials came by.
Does anyone remember the uprising at Devon when the riders were protesting something and rode in costume or stood in the ring not jumping at all. A lot of booing from the stands.
I rode in the 60-70’s at Sleepy Hollow with Mr. DeLavolet ( handsome Cuban ex-cavalry) and at Twin Lakes and it’s western brother “Flying Arrow” run by a Al something. Kentucky Farms is still there flanked by corporate office buildings good for them!). Boulderbrook was Scarsdale riding academy at some point.
Gee Tripleicate YOU are going along ways back!! That had to be the early 60’s. I remember that Kathy Kusner, maybe Benny O’Meara werde involved with the Devon episode.
But again those were great times and I remember back then in between classes there were some trainer, riders that would go to s omeone’s tack room and play cards. Big Time

In the 70’s I was jumping ponies over 3’ jumps bareback in a halter…even backwards! Kids nowadays dont get to do that stuff. I remember taking my Harrisburg qualifying medium to swim in the borrow pit, then being champion the next weekend.[/QUOTE]
this is sadly true. Whenever I go to my barn I just want to round up all the kids and go out in the woods for a gallop, bareback in a halter. but that would never happen. I still goof around like I’m a 9yr old on a pony and have a blast w/ my horses. It saddens me to see people not doing that stuff with their horses. But maybe I’m wrong, perhaps they do have fun staying in the ring 24/7 and not doing anything out of the box. But I don’t regret a single ride when I was younger, my friends and I had so much fun back then, and maybe thats why I never got burnt out.
