Who would you send your young horses to be started?

Not sure where you are in the midwest, but my warmblood mare is going to Kip Fladland in IA this spring. Basically for all the reasons NJRider already said. Also because I have several friends (all dressage) who have already used him, I’ve gone along with them to see their horses in training over the years, and I’ve ridden with him before in a clinic. I just wish he was closer.

Then she will continue with a trainer in her discipline if she needs more time.

I actually will only buy horses that I will start myself. Despite being slight weany deep down, I lace up my boots and get it done
You never really know who or what has been done to them. There are some fantastic horse trainers who do less than fantastic jobs for some horses, some mediocre trainers who do fantastic jobs but all in all if I am going to keep one for me, I want to know everything thats been done and hasnt been done and more importantly what it will do if pressured.

I disagree with western trainers, there are some really really good ones out there and many of which will really expose your horse to more than just backing. Do your homework, meet some horses who have been started by them or their owners atleast and ask of any vices, difficulties etc.
Though, some like anywhere, who skip corners and truly ‘break’ your horse.

Agree do ALOT of homework if you are not able to start yourself and make it mandatory that you can visit ANY time and watch.

Good luck!
