Why are hunt coats so expensive?

Or bear

Or bear [/QUOTE]

The rider will end up bare if the market can not bear the price of the coat.

Bwaha re: bear vs bare.

sonomacounty: the Melton is actually a great deal…it is about 4x as thick as your show jacket but only double the price!!!

In a good Melton (mine is from Horse Country but there are others…especially in the UK) you can be out in 20 degree weather and 40 mile an hour winds…and still be comfortable. And still look like a million bucks.

Looks like revival of an older thread but I’ll throw in .02 anyway.

With much clothing, hunting or otherwise, you get what you pay for. I still have the black melton I bought in Charlottesville in the early 1970s, sadly it has shrunk hanging in my closet, but is still in fine shape for hunting.

My inventory also includes a scarlet coat that is quite literally as old as I am. I bought it used from a retired MFH when I was required to wear one as a whipper-in. Sure, it’s been fairly hunted and so has the minor dings to prove it- but the stitching and workmanship suggest it would easily go another 60 years. I do occasionally wear it still when asked in my travels to whip in.

Now, I can’t speak for the value of ‘newer’ expensive coats. And hate the cut on many of them. But the above is the theory!

Thanks all. I’m the OP. I still look in on this thread when I’m in the Hunting forum.

Now, do they make any meltons that have stretch in them? I’ve got bad shoulders (rotator cuff tears & such) and would love one with some stretch or big & easy to wear in the upper body, at least.

Thanks again.

I’ve never seen one with stretch. You might be better off to get one that’s a bit large on you, to give you room through the shoulder, and then have the waist tailored in.

Thanks Hind. I intend to.
