WHY are racehorse feet "like that"

I really love the blog post @Libby2563 shared. It does a good job painting an evidence-based picture of the issues with thoroughbred feet.

If you read the entire big post, which I highly recommend, you will get a fuller appreciation of the multitude of factors at play.

Who ever owned my OTTB, had a good farrier for him while he racing. His angles were good. He also has great feet. He was just turning 4 when I bought him. I decided to pull his shoes so he could have a break. My farrier did use the cast type wraps for a couple of cycles so he had some protection. Almost two years later he is still barefoot. I will probably put shoes on him for show season though since he did get a little sensitive late last summer when we didn’t have rain and the ground got hard. I had the cast wraps put on him during that time.
