Durn. Those are some handsome critters at Heaven’s Gait. My own not THAT strongly gaited grade walker is now, at age ten, just settling down so that he gets into and stays in his running walk more often. I dont mind the trotting when it happens, especially when he deigns to give me his “dressage” trot out on the trail (I need to have my buddy take some video with my cell phone next time we’re out and see if I can catch him doing it–its a hoot for a not very good rider to feel like she’s doing great things but its all him and despite instead of because of me…
And yeah, he goes anywhere, past anything, through anything. He’s especially good alone, which suits since mostly I ride alone. He thinks he has to be in the lead with a group. I have never taken/ridden hims ANYwhere were his attitude hasnt been, “Fine, I’ve been here before and know where we’re going, lets get down to it.” He is such a sweetie. Now I am thinking I better save my shekels for when I retire him, I had to swallow hard when I saw those prices. (I gave 700 bucks for my guy, 6 yrs old and although not quite dead broke was very well trained and a quick learner for important stuff like ground manners and the Old Lady Mount and Dismount.
They are everywhere around here, Southwest Va, Northeastern TN.

My 20 yr. old wonderful ,perfect ,MFT mare is having stifle problems that keep me from riding her on long rides now. She’ll be with me forever but I have faced reality and need to find a replacement . I have been looking for six months and haven’t found anything . The ones that look good turn out to be lame, or rough or… well we all know finding a good horse can be as tough as finding a good date. But hey I really need a horse!
Why is it so hard to find a sane, sound , smooth gaited horse. In the past I have always bought green horses but I am past that point in my life. I can’t take those risks anymore,. I need a trained horse that can be trusted.
Is it NC or a problem everywhere? I don’t think I’m to picky as color doesn’t matter, breed doesn’t matter as long as he is well gaited. A broken ankle and a bad back means I have to ride a smooth horse, I can’t post anymore.
What am I doing wrong. I need ideas
Thanks[/QUOTE]

I can’t promise perfection of my horse but she is sound, sane, healthy , perfect on the ground, with no vices. She is gaited. I bought her as a “beginner” horse almost 3 years ago . I am an older beginner. If was apparent right away that she was not a beginner horse but needed a knowledgeable horse person to work with her. Her previous owner took her all over on trails and even once to the beach. I have kept her for 3 years and have NOT been consistent with her training because I have had 2 shoulder surgeries with 6 + months recovery and because she is so hard to part with. I have been told by several trainers that worked with her that she is smart and sensitive and could do about anything with a confident , experienced person. I would welcome anyone to come and spend time with her and ride her. She is rusty like I said . Very sweet and good on the ground. I am selling her because she is NOT a good fit for a beginner. I am just trying to find her a great home that will do everything for her that I do. She really is a nice girl! She is boarded in Mill Spring , NC.
I think there’s a TWH mare who is/was the husband’s trail mount and is for sale at my barn. If you want me to find out info I can.
…oh, I’m in NC
