Oh, two mega-classics: Pytchley and certified Harris Tweed!!
Got to love Harris Tweed! Still hand made on the island
As a frequent railbird at Arab sport horse shows, it does stick out in an unflattering way when people combine lots of bling and unusual fabrics and boot leathers. I think of the guidelines that we ādress for successā business women were given back in the day - limit accessories to 7. Would work in dressage for bling - a little goes a long way, does not have to be on your helmet, boots, whip, gloves, bridle, saddle pad, saddle, coat, shirt, stirrups, etc. Yes I did see someone with all of that blinged out. Too much!
I am enough of an old fart that when I spectated a western pleasure class at Congress this year I reflected on what QH people wore when I was a kid. Who would have ever dreamed that QH people would ape the Saddlebred parade horse people in clothing and the fake tails? (Side note: WP gives me a headache but I was sitting with my nieceās trainer and her clients so I remarkably kept my big mouth shut for a change )
Class in attire sticks out in a positive way. Maybe judges donāt consciously register it, but Iām sure most would appreciate a tasteful get up over the alternative. It doesnāt bother me that we have some general guidelines in dressage. We are a classy group, right?
⦠As long as it was on a certified God, as in the picā¦
I scribed for a judge at a big show who bitched about every damn woman that came in the ring wearing LESS makeup than she thought was appropriate. This was many years ago when everyone wore basically the same thing and there was absolutely no bling, back in the day when I got called out for my boots being too shiny (not by a judge though).
Canāt please everyone.
Youāre supposed to wear make up to these things?! Shyieet.
Right?!!! My lower jaw is still bruised up from it repeatedly hitting the floor of the judges booth 30 years ago!
This is so crazy! I havenāt worn makeup since I found some in the bathroom in 7th grade.
I have a friend who showed her QH with no banding, no fake tail, and she wore basic black. Some guy said, āCanāt believe someone would pull a horse out of the field for a show of this quality!ā She was very pleased that she beat him.
Sounds like someone who started out in the saddle seat world! We used to really lay on the foundation, eye makeup, and lipstick when we showed. It made sense in the same way stage makeup made sense - looked fine from the viewpoint of the judge. But Iāve honestly never seen anyone riding dressage who laid it on like that, not even at the WEG or Olympics.
I recently rode western (ranch horse style) in a class at a benefit show and put on lipstick for the first time in maybe 20 years? I hardly recognize myself in the pictures between showing western for the first time in maybe 35 years and the lipstick! LOL! Had a great time tho, sweet horse and lots of fun.
I canāt say Iāve ever in my life packed lipstick to go to a horse show. Lol.
I borrowed it from my sister at the show! Kind of a last minute thought!
Before her judging career she was an Olympic rider :o
I always wear lipstick but thatās because my lips are chronically dry and drive me nuts without and I canāt stand lip balm. I have never worn foundation.
Twenty plus years ago, all the women wore at least lipstick. There is also one lady that schooled in pearls.
I have never worn makeup of any kind whatsoever. I cannot square make up and athletics.
Mind, the ladies who run in the Olympic track and fields events often rock up with makeup, nails, jewelry, and then beat world records so the two things are obviously not mutually exclusive. I guess for those of us who donāt wear makeup in any other aspect of our lives, a sporting event being the one place we would wear it is super counter intuitive.
Yāall need to get with the program. False eyelashes are all the rage now.
You can even get them with glitter on them to match all your other bling.
Not gonna lie, I love the flowers!!
Also reminds me of one of my favourite music videos (and the second certified god from the same era on this thread):
NO they didnāt. I only knew one woman who wore any amount of makeup and that was my trainer. In the late 80s thru 90s never wore it. Cannot imagine at all. Scribed more than I showed and never had a judge comment
Agreed. I cannot stand lipstick on my lips. Iām okay with balm or gloss, but even on my wedding when I had makeup done for the pics, no way on lipstick. Certainly never wore it to compete.
Ok. I donāt know where you are, but the late 90ās, in Wellington, there was lipstick.
