Why do they still have Maclay Regionals?
Frankly, the best finals in the country in many ways is the New England Equitation Championships. Kids that do them all still look forward to that one the most.
That is a great event, and the group that runs it deserves a huge amount of credit for getting it started and improving it year after year. It also includes the horsemanship test, which adds an additional fun aspect.

It is a stand alone event that goes on all week, not part of a bigger show, so it’s not as much of a scheduling challenge in that regard.

NEEC is a wonderful show and the organizers and staff do an amazing job! DD never went as a junior, but qualified on a lark last year as an adult, we went and had a fabulous time. The fact that it is a stand alone show is one of the things that make it so special, they offer so many fun things in addition to the actual classes that even if you have a bad ride, you can still have a great time.

We plan to keep going each year until DD wins

Good plan. Plus the candy apples are legendary!

Here is the site for anyone who is interested.

They also have a Facebook page with full results from this year. Plus pictures from the costume class.

For the record folks, we have started a similar event for the Mid-Atlantic riders, which actually has a few features that NEEC doesn’t (and visca versa) Scholarships, college representatives, team competition, and maybe the best awards of any show running. It’s in a few weeks.

Chunky Munky, tried pming you with a question about the show but your inbox is full.

She rode beautifully last year to win her class and a huge silver platter.

Hands down the best Final around. 5 days, great facility, incredible show leadership, team competition for the kids, costumes, scholarships, rigorous 3 phase horsemanship competition…and pretty fun for the adult set as well!

And yes, even if you fall off, you can still get a peanutbutter caramel candy apple.

It’s pretty interesting to see the way riders seem to play “musical chairs” w/ the horses (or 1 rider ages out, horse is passed on to another top rider, often at the same barn)…and to see which horses have been in the ribbons at finals year after year. I would think it’d be pretty fun to get to ride one of those horses!
I’ve been fortunate enough to sit on a few of those horses - never to jump or show, but to do flatwork, and they are really, really cool  but also tricky!

CM, may send you a couple of questions in a PM if that’s not too much trouble.

. . . Remember back in the day, it was very east coast centered. A minuscule few westerners made the haul back when ALL the Medal Finals were at the Garden, including Saddle Seat and Stock Seat (Reining Eq).
And yet the ones who came from far away and won at MSG were really outstanding, Mary Mairs Chapot, Wendy Mairs and Lindy Patrick from CA, Jimmy Kohn and Conrad Homfeld from TX and Chrystine Jones Tauber from the mid-west, I think.

For those trying to pm me, I will attempt to clear old messages. But you can contact me through the website www.midatlanticeq.com or at ems@midatlanticeq.com

There weren’t always regionals? Sorry, showing my age there!!

OP, genuinely curious, why does the location of the final make a difference? Not being snarky, I’m really just wondering.
No reason to say, “Sorry”, I am showing my age. lol

The location makes a difference because of logistics. Stalls, schooling, schedule, rental cost, and so on. When the Garden hosted, anything even one minute over was time and one half for the employees per hour.

And Lindy Patrick has the singular honor if having hauled back all the way across the country for the MacClay, which she won. The Saddle Seat Medal(good Hands and Seat?), which she won. And the Stock Seat Medal, which she won. Three times, three wins…maybe 68 to 70ish. Not in the same year, of course.

If you are ever on Horsey Jeopardy? Now you know.

I thought Lindy Patrick won two finals and was second in the third. She rode with Flintridge - Jimmy Williams.

Thats possible, it was 40-45 years ago…going off actual memory which fails these days. I think Lindy rode a few years ahead of AnnK?

I think you are right, I don’t remember her winning the Maclay although I saw her compete at MSG in that class and the Medal finals at least a couple of times. She was definitely before AK’s time, mid to late 60s. She was also very successful in the junior hunters with her wonderful No Commotion.

NEEC is possibly the only thing I truly miss about my childhood in New England. The cold and dark winters, not so much.

Chunky Munky, I am hoping my latest youngster matures into a decent enough eq horse to be able to do your finals!

Great Sing! A number of people are borrowing or leasing horses just for the weekend  Today is the last day to enter for the free Dover’s triple stitched halter give away!! You can do that! Just go to our Facebook page, Mid Atlantic Equitation Festival and scroll down the page to look for the directions to enter. it is open to everybody so tell your friends too! NEEF is the best! It’s a fun show for the kids and parents. The custom classes, the teams. The organizers are great and the video at the dinner brings everyone together.

Cool! I’m on the DL as far as my equitation goes, but maybe next year!

For those that are fans of the New England Finals, the Mid-Atlantic Equitation Festival is basically the same type of show for the Mid-Atlantic riders-and pre-entries close TODAY!
