We own a boarding barn and switched over to Strategy, we feed the recommended amounts and the horses actually started dropping weight so we had to increase. Ended up spending more for the feed when we thought we would spend less as we were supposed to feed less. After about 6 weeks we went back to our regular feed.
For a low NSC feed we use Seminole Safe and Lite. It’s the lowest on the market I believe, or it was when we started using it. I have to drive to another state to get it, luckily we’re only about 20 miles from the state line, then further to the store, but it’s worth it. We feed it to the ones that are sensitive to grass and “easy keepers”. That way they get the nutritional content they need without having to feed a “handful” of regular grain.
For the rest of the horses we feed either Southern States 11/6 or 10/10/10 (depending on the horse) or TC senior. All the horses have wonderful hoof growth, fat, shine in the spring, fluffy in the winter and have a comfortable energy level without being too stupid or too lethargic.
Oh! And in 7 years no colic (knock on wood, please God!) except for my blind horse who colliced when I didn’t have him blanketed during a cold snap and the barimeter dropped and another horse coliced on BOSS the owner fed him whole. They were flushed right out, whole little sunflower seeds. Since then I grind them to a power, looks like cigarette ashes!
